I promised to help a friend with his film project today, but he didn't send me the information until 4am last night, and it turns out the shoot is two hours away by bus.

I need a way to say 'maybe' to people when they ask me to do something, and possible learn to inquire for further details.

that's just ridiculous and asking way too much. if he wanted your help he should have been more considerate about details. when people say, "hey, can you do me a favor?" you say, "hm, what is it? i might have to help save the dolphins that day."

The truth is that the person probably wanted you to say yes before you got all the details, that way it'd be hard for you to back out. People are scandalous like that. Just be honest with people and it'll save you from being in positions you don't want to be in.
