yea man, it was really freeing. I have 2 more I'm working on getting rid off also but they're way, way smaller and more manageable. Also deciding to finally get rid of my car, it's been nothing but trouble the whole time I've owned it. Just took it in for another $300 repair and they told me it actually needs a $2300 head gasket repair...fuck that noise. I can sell it for what I owe and just start over, at the least it gets it off my plate. A couple more big ones ahead of me, but these are all things I've been thinking about for a while and finally just took action on. Feels good.

i just got my pc back from a week of repairs (they were slow as fuck) and just realised my 1TB drive was 95% comprised of pirated shit (programs, music, movies, whatever) and porn. i wonder if its normal for comp du's to come across that shit or they were creeped out.

well, i guess the biggest issue would be the amount of pirated music/film on there - but like i said, i imagine its pretty common for repairmen (?) to come across lots of stuff like that. either way, i live in australia so i don't think the riaa have jurisdiction to kick down my door.

edit: if i was in the states, do you think such a thing would be reported? or is that a breach of privacy? like would the repair du call up universal pictures and be like 'sir, i have something you may want to see!'

almost definitely they were borrowing any good stuf you may have on your comp.

regards to breach of privacy - it's a pretty confused area of the law. certainly in australia the recognition of a breach of privacy tort is contentious, and any interests in maintaining privacy have to be balanced against interests in freedom of information etc. the US would be worse, as they have various codified freedoms (freedom of speech and the press etc) which are even more difficult to circumvent. that being said, i think you can bring an action for breach of privacy in the US.

if you were doing something illegal then the repairmen wouldn't be breaching your privacy in telling the authorities, but in reality i think they'd probably just cbf the whole thing - pretty much everyone has pirated stuff nowadays.

It's nothing to worry about. When I did desktop support for MDs YEARS ago, I would get laptops for repair with porn DVDs still in the drives like once or twice a week.
