ROY X CONE contest, 1.1.11 - 2.1.12

Last weekend my organization had a staff retreat in Kiyunga - about an hour outside of Kampala. Given that when I arrived a year and a half ago, we were 3 full-time staff and now we're 18, this was long overdue.

It was a remarkably effective few days, but you all don't want to see pictures of my ROYxCone-clad ass sitting in a meeting room.

BUT, ROYxCones did get to interact with some local fauna!

That's right, in Africa you can totally just kick it with giraffes, elephants and lions. We're homies.

Upon returning on Saturday, Homegirl and I popped in to Nakawa market.

IMG_0356.jpg

Markets here are like gigantic thrift stores - sometimes the clothes even still have the tags on them from American thrift stores! That means that this place is like a gigantic gold mine... I know somewhere in these piles are a pair of beautiful vintage denims waiting to be found... gah!

Where did everybody get these high quality polaroid pics? Do they make digital polaroids now?

Yea it's from smartphones, it's the best looking thing my camera phone does.

Seeing a lot of these types of images in anticipation of Friday's presidential election: swarms of cops being very demonstrably moved around the city.

Monday... you all know what day that was

A delicious bottle of red Homegirl brought back from her visit to Cape Town

IMG_0648.jpg

Went great with some bread, spicy-sweet relish spread and camembert

IMG_0649.jpg

And the main course: bacon, spinach and blue cheese stuffed chicken breasts. BOMB.

Sittin' on the front porch, reading, doing homework, and eating chips and salsa. Feels like spring is here!

THose new Tricker's look terrific. Do we know what model the Sierra Trading POst ones were? THey look much more streamlined than the Stow, a bit more like the Loake brogue boots.

Oil them every now and then. My Stows have been through three winters now, looking good but I'm getting a tiny bit of cracking.

I tend to wear my Lennons with the RXC, they go better with mega cuffs.

But ever since I dropped an Edwardian mahogany negative frame on my foot, I've switched back to the Trickers.

Thanks, Paul. It's a mystery as to exactly what model they are. The model # on the inside doesn't come up in any Google searches. They are definitely more sleek than Stows.

Yeah, I had to do a smaller double cuff to go with the Tricker's. I will put a coat of Obenauf's LP or oil once in a while. Yours are looking fantastic!

In other news, I think my Roys might be due for a warm soak soon. They've stretched quite a bit!

Also EDC: Books, I think I got backpack fades

_IGP7857.JPG

Ex: Backpack or Buckle-back Fades?

_IGP7860.JPG

Look out for my low-contrast, college fades, these are gunna see often machine washing.

I'm having trouble taking pictures with my SLR, its just got the 18-55mm lens that it came with, and all this artificial lighting(2 Fluorescent Lights and a Desk Lamp) isn't prime shooting conditions. Any tips from you guys with SLRs?

I've posted mine on the EDC thread often enough, but here it is for you guys. Knives & snus get swapped around a lot... New key-fob from MOA (thanks bro!) And of course... The chickens! :)

your cinch! That's some amazing fading! As for the picture taking, I have pretty decent luck using lamps

Very interested in other contestants' EDCs as well.

Mmm, it differs by state, but where I am if they spot a knife on you in public, the police can fine you up to $1000 on the spot and confiscate your knife.

They can also carry out random searches in public without notice.

The laws are pretty strict, e.g. a while ago, some workers left their contruction site to grab coffee and one of them still had a work knife of some description on his belt...guess what, $1000 fine!

Heard similar story about farmers coming into town to pick up machine bits, and still had their leatherman on their belts - same deal.

My collectors licence allows me to transport knives that are 'safely contained' though.

Is that a Hello Kitty hand-cream?

Say what you will about guns and violence in the US of A, at least the cops can't on a whim pull you off the street and go through your pockets.

(Where I live it's legal for any non-felon over 18 to carry a firearm withing two steps of firing as long as it is in plain view. With a permit you can carry fully loaded -- concealed or open. Crazy, huh?)

I hate to bring it up, but while the cops are not suppose to pull you off the street and go through your pockets, they still do it and they mostly do it with poor people, people of color, and mainly anybody driving a beat up old car who looks latino.

^Yes, but they have to trump up a charge (speeding and his eyes looked glassy like he'd been smoking pot or staring at a computer screen surfing for lite porn in supertrash, so I searched the car). But they can't "at random" go through your pockets.

Oh well, that makes all the difference.

That's true, but the new Arizona laws are kinda blurring the line.

i was gonna reply to cash's post, but decided not to derail with politics. since it's become a discussion, i will just say: australia is a civic paradise compared to the US. police presence is much lower, and the officers i encountered were far more laid back, level-headed, and reasonable than any i've dealt with in the states.

if a cop wants to search you in the states, he will find a reason. and cops do want to search you in the states.

construction workers & farmers getting fined sounds ridiculous (and like urban legend), but it's also pretty unnecessary for anyone else to be carrying a knife.

also (as almostnice knows) - A.C.A.B.

Exactly. The cops will search anyone they want, especially if you "fit the description"

Looking at the EDC thread, I'm shocked by how many people carry knives. Is the knife for protection or some other reason? Cool factor maybe? Anyway here's my EDC along with fit pics
