White's Horse Hide/Shell Cordovan group order

The cordovan service boots, too, look superb. But $700 for a military workboot is consumerism gone mad to me.

To be honest, to me, this boot doesn't look different enough from a Red Wing GT to be worth almost triple the cost. I realize that it's cordovan which always commands a premium but still the overall style is nothing special and a cordovan work boot is overkill.

I've seen old ads for cordovan work boots on this site back when work boots like these were still actually used for working. I dont see it as overkill; its just and extra mile u are willing to go in the quality of your shoes/boots. There are jeans that cost 500-600$ as well

the black horsehide looks beautiful indeed...

so how much will a pair of engineer boots in black hh or service boots in brown mocha chromexcel cost? just received the boots bible free and easy issue and the vibergs in there looked really great; especially the 40's service boot looked amazing

any pictures of those?

I'm still trying to decide on details for a Viberg service boot, def. going with the 310 last, nailed down, same leather as Kiya's boots, rest I'm not sure about...

This whole thread is a testament to the greatness of Edmond. I can't believe Brett Viberg allowed him to walk down this path and in the midst of it all cast shadows on other bootmakers such as Julian. It really doesn't make Viberg look great. Most craftsman have respect for other craftsman and don't knock their hustle. Apparently that ain't the case here.

that actually suprised me also

when I mailed Brett earlier this year to have a pair of custom boots made, I attached a picture of some boots to the mail, including the boots Julian did for Rising Sun, cause they were part of my inspiration.

first thing he mentioned in his answer was that he was too busy and I had to mail him again in a few months, nothing wrong with that, but he continued by saying that if I really wanted a boot that looked like the Julian boot, I might as well contact Julian, but I should know that he uses Mexican bootmakers, so you don't really get what u pay for...

I didn't go into it and contacted him again yesterday, cause I'm really digging their 310 last, it seems he does have time now and when I mentioned this group buy, he mentioned straight away that it might take forever cause of problems with the cordovan and horsehide and because people are very specific in their demands.

long story short, I'm ordering my pair of Vibergs on my own cause I like to get them before I'm old and retired.

but the whole 'julian thing' just seems really weird to me.

also, if their quality wouldn't be on par, why would MF get his roadchamps made by them, since Christophe is all about quality stuff?

I guess it was pretty obvious what Edmond's "reliable source" was. Makes me glad I didn't participate with this, because generally people who diss other people's products have something to hide themselves.

Also, just because somebody has "Mexicans" working for them does not mean the end product is crap. Julian's boots, as far as I know, are made in LA.

I don't mind people not having time. I am sure Brett has better things to do than make nit picky boots for over fashioned geeks (myself included), but bad mouthing other folks in the same business is low class.

What this sounds like is that Julian probably owes Brett some money, and Brett has been bitter that Julian hasn't paid him back yet. All these stinkin' boots are too expensive, and I'm just waiting till the trend dies so we can all go back to paying normal prices on boots.

All my western boots are made by Mexicans, and the craftsmanship is exceptional.

dunno what's going on between them, I dug up the mail again, but I guess there's no use in posting it, since I don't want this thread to turn into something negative...

I will say this though, ever since I had the chance to see and feel the pair of nailed down service boots (310 last) that my friend Rob has from Viberg, I wanted a pair myself, they are amazing:

I'm going with a perforated cap toe, straight heel instead of cuban and 7-8 eyelets, still deciding on what leather though

looking forward to seeing your service boots Tiro

well, that seals it, if brett thinks that theres a big probability that the group buy wont materialise then im either going the Mr freedom or Wesco route for my engineers

All this is making me really appreciate William Lennon. Horween leather, experience that reaches back a century or so, pricetag around $250. And no bullshit.

he didn't say there's a big chance it won't materialise, he just said it'll take a long time to get it all sorted

are those not bad for 250, especially if it uses Horween. where does it mention that on the site?

They told me they use Horween.

These guys have been making working boots for a century; you can get a certain amount of customisation from them (leather, height, toecap, sole). They're worthwhile, as a comparison/control, when you look at the cost of some customised working boots. But they don't come in cordovan...

well i just ordered merlot CXL service boots.

will see how it will go :)

i'll post fit pics when i will get them (i guess soon).

I ordered from ultrasound boots, great and fast service they got.

But i'm still in for brown HH sometime in future.

This ones:

those look sweet, what I've been wondering about though, is that a cuban heel on those or not?

It seems like heel is a lot less slanted then the cuban heels u see on whites and wescos for example...

I'm asking cause I'm still not sure if I want that type of heel or a straight heel on my boots.

cuban is great, at least for white's because they seem to make the straight heel look slightly awkward. Those viberg's look like the heel is shorter than the white's, maybe thats why? (to me at least)

I think this heel is actually a scalloped heel, which differs from the cuban by flaring out slightly at the bottom.

Cuban:p><p>Scalloped: (note how the edge looks more like a half circle than a straight line) <img src=l_409_369_3de28251-d790-45d5-9037-29474b82caba[/img]

nailed down was actually on my final specs, but i've read [from several pages back] that Brett mentioned something about the sole being rigid & does not have flex__ therefore uncomfortable & tough to break in.

did your friend encounter any problem on them?

If you haven't checked the last couple of pages, this thing is pretty much dead.
