What the Fuck? - The Quality Control Thread

Opening up the floor for discussion, ranting, and experiences with buying items of clothing that should, for all intents and purposes, survive normal wear but don't. Myself and quite a few other Superfuturians I know of have had really off-putting experiences recently with items that have died prematurely for no apparent reason, other than the fact that they were much more poorly made than you'd originally think.

I'm going to start things off with this pair of J. Crew Wool Officer Pants from last F/W season - bought them on sale for god knows how cheap, have worn them less than twenty times, never washed, and this is the result:

zphud.jpg

major pilling, total disintegration of the fabric's weave... not what I expected from a mid-weight wool. I have Uniqlo chinos that have been

washed 3-4 times and worn 10x that much that are still solid all over, so I'm sure my cockular region isn't leaching out fabric-eating acids.

What the fuck, J. Crew?

What was wrong with Robert Geller fw2008 zippers? Like every item I've handled from that season refused to zip properly

Also, I've had to resew buttons on every Band of Outsiders shirt I've ever had, shirts have held together wonderfully except for the buttons... seems like a weird oversight

holy shit @ those jcrew pants.

i too have a lot of jcrew and luckily all of it is still going strong while being worn + washed a lot.

theyre seriously gnarly, and this is actually the second pair of jcrew pants i've had this happen to... my knitwear from them has held up remarkably well, but i have shit luck with their bottoms.

in terms of designer shit that that has crapped out on me, i have a neil barrett cardigan with sleeve openings that have stretched further than an amateur porn star's anus and won't shrink back no matter how hard i try.

maybe its just me, but i never really associated designer brands with long lasting craftsmanship. their whole business model is built on perpetual change and disposable (even if theyd never admit it) clothes.

i actually expected more out of jcrew than rick owens

My friend ordered a cardigan/sweatshirt combination from Yesstyle, not listening to me when I told him it would most likely not be worth the 80$ he spent, and as soon as he put it on the zipper broke along with two of the buttons on the front. It's making me think twice about their B.Son ripoff mock hoodie.

I have a pair of KZO indigo denim, while not as bad as those jcrew, the thigh dart stitching constantly come apart. I had to replace the zipper after only a few months, and both pocket bags have come apart.

yeah. same thing happened with my black KZO, dart stitching and pockets came apart too.

EDIT: i noticed that some distressing on bag pockets caused them to tear apart. stupid.

Most of my designer stuff has held up alright, but so has most of my H&M stuff.

The few things from Uniqlo I own, however, are practically in the same condition I bought them in after countless wears. Quality is unbelievable for the price.

rick owens trainers and rick owens RY zippers are complete shit.

I had to spend over $100 to have the midsoles, and the soles completely replaced on the trainers, and now im waiting on having the zipper replaced on my rick leather, fun. i dont mind the tees and the tanks tearing up, i think it works. i do mind my knits pilling up terribly and the buttons coming off of the cardigan.

i got a great deal on the shoes but at the end of the day it was only 3 months in and I had to have the entire sole and midsole replaced which to me is completely insane. the zipper on the jacket is the first real zipper issue ive had, but it was a bad one the slider pulled off 3 teeth and fell off. ive also had seams come undone on drkshdw pants and jacket. which i can deal with but again is frustrating.

whyred pants. two pairs, both have had nearly all their buttons come off, and the metal clasp is starting to rip through the fabric on one pair. extra bitterness due to the following:

the wallet-side back-pocket button had popped off my navy pair. the pockets are too shallow for my wallet to ever stay in if the pocket isn't buttoned (i've left it on my chair, it's fallen into the toilet -- yes, i rinsed it off and pretended THAT never happened -- and etc.) when I went to the bar, I threw my wallet in my BillyKirk bag which I never, ever do.

got into a fight with my girlfriend and had the bag stolen literally right out from under me by some swift-handed East Village crackhead while both of us were close-talking. 400 cash in the wallet at the time, which was another total anomaly since I never carry cash in excess of, say, 60.

BillyKirk bag is (was?) fantastic quality and is, of course, blameless in this particular, head-vein-popping incident. fuck those pants, though.

i'll echo what was said earlier and state that aa items in the same size in different colors often fit very differently. only thing i'd buy off them are basic tees and maybe their dress shirts since they're relatively cheap and actually fit me.

edit: noticed artificalsky's post on page 2. brought a pair of corpus jeans to the cleaners, i put 'em on and noticed they were a bit breezy. when i look down, part of the button-fly had come unsewn. easy fix, but fucking annoying.
