A brief extract from the ROY thread. Seven days out on England's East coast/

view from just outside our house, on the way to a terrific pub called The Neptune

1Neptune.jpg

Up early this morning for low tide.We were checking out the mussel beds, they stretch for miles

4Reculver.jpg

Looking for these. Fossilised sharks teeth from the late Cretaceous...

5SHarksteeth.jpg

Where we were looking for the shark's teeth also marks one of the first spots where the romans invaded britain. Up on the hill above us is a ruined abbey that was built over the remain of the Roman fort.

8Recoluvercastle.jpg

The bay itself is also where Barnes Wallis tested the bouncing bomb… there are many tiny airforce museums nearby with prototypes on display, all fished up from the same beach where you can find 50m year old sharks teeth.

It was freezing out in the mist and rain, so we retired to a cafe in nearby margate to drink coffee, eat cake and examine our haul: three sharks teeth, and some fossilised stems.

10ourhaul.jpg

Margate is pretty run down - but in the middle of this decaying shopping arcade is a terrific joke shop.

OUr final night in whitstable. This is one of the only places on the East coast where the sun sets over the water.

Bestsunset.jpg

A couple of days later, we were looking for modern architecture. This is Bexhill Pavilion, the first International School building in Britain, built around 1935. I last visited over a decade ago - since then it's been restored, with a new cinema. It's great to see it looking well cared-for.

bexhill2.jpg

bexhill.jpg

lamp.jpg

We had a great time in Hastings. On the way back we stopped in Pevensey - this was where the Norman fleet sheltered when they invaded England.

Pevensey.jpg

Nearby was this excellent pub - probably dates from the 1500s, beautiful oak beams and floor.

smugglersinn.jpg

No vis on the roys. Im afraid... just an LVC workshirt.

ptinpub.jpg

This building is a bit of a contrast to Bexhill - a Roman Fort that the Normans conquered in their first few days in England - later they rebuilt it as their own castle. It's a beautiful ruin.

x post from the cone x roy thread.

I am going to try this video thing again

hey, there I am

I feel like its been too long since there was an update of me and my roys.

Before I'd sent them off to Roy to be hemmed I steamed them and used a little febreeze. I don't know if the febreeze fermented on them or had no effect, but they smelled awful yesterday afternoon. Decided to soak them:

DSCN8898.jpg

went to see 'the green hornet' at the Crystal Theater in Arapahoe,NE. For 2 adult tickets, medium popcorn, skittles, and a small coke it was 10$ I almost crapped my pants. When we lived in Omaha it was usually 10 just for a ticket.

DSCN8901.jpg When I got back from the movie the water was this really pale, almost piss yellow color after the hot soak so I decided to go ahead and give them a gentle wash in the shower with dr bronnners

let them air dry overnight, got up had some breakfast with the wife:

DSCN8902.jpg

Went into a sort of food coma, and once i'd had enough coffee I decided to start in on some chores. The only interesting chore I've done all day is starting in on this typewriter I bought recently. It still works, but several of the keys stick, and it looks as though it hadn't been used for 15-20 years atleast.

I didn't get pics in my jeans as i was the one behind the camera but this is what we did today!

These are some abandoned slaughter houses in fort worth. There was tons of graffiti to check out, but i've only edited these. It was super creepy here as the wind was blowing doors open and closed and the smell of rot was in the air.

xpost from Roy x Cone...

The Roys & I had a fun weekend…

I got together with a bunch of friends & we headed up to Huntsville for some ice climbing.

I prefer my soft-shells for climbing, but could only fit the Roys under the hardshell bibs! Turned out to be a good thing, because conditions were really wet! Here are some pics, most of which I got off a friend's point-and-shoot.

There was lots of wet snow - I switched over to double boots for the climb

Some excerpts from a faaaatty ROY X CONE contest, 1.1.11 - 2.1.12 post... just like riff!

Now then, about my weekend activities: Saturday was pretty much the day of Doing Things That I've Been Wanting To Do For A While. Felt good!

First up: dirt-dyeing. See the mud-dyeing thread for much much more, but here are a couple snapshots of the pre-dyeing on Saturday morning

While the tea-dye pre-treatment was ongoing, I headed out for some errands

To a tailor (yes, my favorite pass-time... not a lot else to do here...)

The plan: navy blue linen suit, lined with kitenge. Get African!

IMG_0895.jpg

Decided to try on some of the pre-made goods while I was there. Which goes best with the Roys?

Popped into some second-hand clothing shops

Nothing remarkable, other than a couple interesting lables:

chicken anyone?

While the shirts dried on Sunday, I decided that I would find a place I'd never been before to post up and read for a bit.

Wound up finding a place called "Capital Palace Hotel" or something. The upstairs of the restaurant area is remarkably not-cheesy! Missing are all the usual desidrata of Ugandan hotel decore: plastic flowers, vynil floral table cloths, linoleum everything... this place feels like a tree-house!

IMG_1042.jpg

Well done

The subject of today's reading: my uncle's recently self-published book.

IMG_1043.jpg

Got a few dozen pages into it, and it's interesting and a smooth, accessible read

warning: picture overload !!! :)

me and my jeans spent the whole day with these bad boys...

surveying instruments for 30.000€ from the university (left box: tachymeter (measures with lasers) , right box: gps set)

bild9290.jpg

a fellow student and me had to measure this small course of a stream for a student research project!

bild9270.jpg

Nr.1 - a small dam

bild9292.jpg

bild9276.jpg

Nr.2 - a little spillway in case of high flood

bild9263.jpg

First we had to use the GPS gadget to tell us the exact coordinates of our position

(needed two fixed points!)

bild9294.jpg

bild9297.jpg

bild9295.jpg

after a few trys - the coordinates of the fixed points!

bild9322.jpg

cont. ...

after that we've marked each point with a nail and prepared the tachymeter to start the actual work!

bild9326.jpg

bild9327.jpg

Backside which shows all of the data we need to know to insert those into CARD (computer programm!)

bild9328.jpg

Frontside, where the laser comes out of!

bild9329.jpg

The lasers are getting reflected from a small mirror -> click! and this way the tachymeter receives all the data (distance,height,...) we need to know!

waywt

bild9317.jpg

bild9318.jpg

after we've measured all 49points our work was done, i've changed clothes and went back to university and joined some other fellow students

bild9330.jpg

now it's chill-out-time

bild9288.jpg

thx for watching...!

Great pics on the kayak glassing. Looks like we had a similar weekend. I was solo though so no process pics. I glassed my surfboard. Tonight I will glass on the fins, then hot coat. and hopefully hit the waves this weekend. Pretty excited. Started the project in November.

At the insistence of my friend Mr. Riff I'm cross posting this from the great Stronghold World Tour! Link!

I had my first class at 8 this morning. Ran for the first time in 2 weeks afterward (another thing I've been neglecting due to audition stress). I managed 12.5 miles. Feel terrible and good at the same time if you know what I mean?

Anyhoo, decided to take a walk around campus and show you guys what's up around here. Here's my best attempt at an artsy photo. I'm no -Z- hahah.

DSC_5016.jpg

Now that I've got that out of the way we can get onto more interesting things (I hope).

I’m pursuing a bachelor’s degree in classical double bass performance from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. I picked this school to be with a really amazing bass teacher, but didn’t really know anything about the school outside of that. Granted, I may be transferring to Peabody, but this place is pretty interesting. It’s normal to see people walking around in religious garb.

DSC_5020.jpg

Checking my mailbox. Nothing today.

DSC_5021.jpg

As a musician, I’ve played a couple concerts in my schools Basilica. It’s a beautiful building. Even though I’m not religious in the slightest I really found the sights to be quite powerful. Thought I should show it off before I leave.

Some amazing stuff on the last few pages everybody, gonna try to go out and rep some people. well not a ton going on around the cities, still too cold to do much.

tried to shoot tonight after work but the wind picked up and the temp dropped about 20 degrees in an hour, so i had to call it quits early. nothing that interesting, just some people after work downtown...

here is about 45 min. of my day, told through the other good, cold people of Minneapolis. enjoy.

Almost stopped into Hell's Kitchen to grab a drink, but decided otherwise. i'll have to get breakfast there one of these days so i can show it to you guys, they have amazing, amazing food, a really cool (well kitschy, but cool) atmosphere (its in a basement) plus they make their own peanut butter which i love.
