Same, same. I grew up with 2 labs. Still miss them. Great pic, beatle.

Yeah, but now I feel down. So on a happy note. Now that me a B have a new casa with a nice yard we are thinking about replacing sayds (a fat yellow lab) with a chunky black lab pup we found at a high kill shelter and naming her Oprah. Anyways.. Sup Sayds miss you piggy.

Puppies....

you all are making me mad homesick right now.

Last night I was walking to a friend's house-party and made superbestfriends with a street-pup. Homegirl followed me all the way to the party, waited outside for the few hours I was there, and walked me back down to the bar. Unfortunately she was gone by the time I left the bar. Or maybe it was fortunate because I don't think my (former army barracks) flat is any place for a happy pooch

=/

Dkatz - We actually did adopt a street pup many years ago! Found her in Barbados & fell in love... Was a lot easier to bring her home than we expected... Our home would be a zoo if we had less self-control!:o

@ Farmer... Go get that black lab pup... You can never replace an old friend, but it's always good to make more room to love a new one :)

Eagle eyes ;) Not mine. A buddy is thinking of stepping up to a full pro rig, and I'm using it for a couple of weeks to check it out. I have the D300 (not the "s"), and it's quite an eye-opener to be using a full frame with lenses of this quality :)

all this talk is making me happy to be home with "the little girl", our family darling. this was taken a year back when she was still the baby. back then my mom was still really afraid of dogs but im glad shes now free to run around the house and tear things apart now. heh.

On Friday, we headed out to a small island off my island country (Singapore). Pulau Ubin. Pretty cool place which rent out actually decent mtb for you to cycle around on gravel, mud, tarmac trails. Nice scenery and mangrove forest to explore.

Was trying to get a close up of the barnacles and so step down onto that wet patch over there. Slipped and fell when I was turning back to the dry spot. Knelt down in slow mo to break my fall. For once I though I'm gonna hit the rock and fall into the sea.

On the next day, wore the same pair of jeans and headed to another island, Sentosa. The jeans are not yet fully dried and decided on a beach wash.

Dkatz - back in action! :D Looking forward to seeing your market haul!

Your wish is my command!

Yesterday my jeans went to Owino Market (apparently now named St. Balikuddembe Market... just learned that) - the biggest market in at least Uganda. It's got pretty much everything you could imagine, but I was there with an eye for clothing (can you believe it?). It's seriously like a thrift-lover's wet dream. I spent a few hours in there, loving the interactions I was having with people (for the most part), and the thrift-hunt.

The day's pickups:

Four shirts: 35,000UGX = ~$16

IMG_2340.jpg

Apparently I had an eye for checks/stripes. Or maybe patterned shirts just hide the dirt better...

Pretty funny- all four shirts are pretty significantly altered to be slimmed-up (so they fit me great!)

IMG_2347.jpg

some fantastically wrinkly linen pants, for those super-hot days: 18,000UGX = ~$8.50

IMG_2344.jpg

some more kitenge (wax-print) fabric, for shirts

IMG_2348.jpg

the far left will become a long-sleeve button-downs, and maybe the lining of a suit (also very similar to one of the kitenge long-sleeve shirts I already have), the other two will be short-sleeve button-downs. Love the umbrellas

And the real score of the day: a "Chesterfield Racing" motorcycle jacket!

I was pretty damn stoked to stumble across this. Unfortunately I don't ride so I would feel like a tool wearing it, so I gave it to my be-motorcycled roommate.

There are enough motorcycle- and leather-fans around here, there's gotta be someone who can get me some info about this jacket. Anybody?

I'll wait to mention how much I pad for it 'til I get some more info about it from you suckers!

IMG_2318.jpg

IMG_2322.jpg

IMG_2320.jpg

I love the cafe-racer feel of it, particularly because of how well-worn it clearly is.

This sucker's clearly seen some serious riding-days. Could use some good-good loving, but I love the worn-in vintage feel.

IMG_2349.jpg

IMG_2351.jpg

A couple other notable finds that I decided against were legit snake-skin cowboy boots (dude started at 100,000UGX, so I probably coulda gotten him down to 40k or so... but decided I don't really need pointy-ass cowboy boots) & a pair of A. Testoni "Red Label" tan loafers that were pretty sick but not enough my style to validate the 55,000UGX price the vendor didn't seem willing to be flexible on.F'

Today...

I had to marvel at how bad ass I feel in this jacket:

IMG_2324.jpg

IMG_2326.jpg

then I dropped my care off at the Bugolobi Football Club's car-wash

IMG_2336.jpg

it apparently took the dude a solid four hours to get it clean... my little guy was DIRTY.

Decided to have some local grub for breakfast:

Katogo (on the left side of the plate) essentially began as leftovers from the night before, reheated and stewed together. Usually some banana, tomato, beans, uh.. random other shit.

Pilao (on the right side of the plate) is somewhat-fried, "spiced" (extremely mildly) rice.

Avocado. Love it. The avocados here are not the (mutant) hass-style ones we get at home in the States- they're much larger, with smooth green skins, and are much sweeter and creamier. Less good for guacamole, but I still eat the shit out of them.

Beef stew/sauce (in the little bowl). Again, this would traditionally have been some leftovers from the night before. A lot of times when you get katogo, the meat stew is cooked in with the katogo. This sauce actually had pretty good flavor, which is unusually (blandness is the name of the game with Ugandan food).

Lots of "chili sauce".

All told: 3,000 UGX = ~$1.40

IMG_2327.jpg

suck on that, ranonaranonarat!

After working at the restaurant for a few, I decided to head over to the super swanky Emin Pasha hotel to meet up with some friends and do some work in a nicer environment.

The cafe/bar of this hotel is probably the nicest place to sit in this city. But it's also American-expensive: iced coffee was 8,000 UGX = ~$3.50!

IMG_2335.jpg

Back to Bugolobi to pick up the car, decided while I was waiting that it was a good moment for some traintrack-porn

IMG_2338.jpg

(yeah yeah jeans and flipflops. Whatever it was a hot Sunday)

Aaaand then I came back home and went for a run through Bugolobi marsh through the Kitintale slums and out towards Luzira prison. Got good and lost on the way back through the slums until a young homey on a bike offered to be my guide. Then we raced a bit and he kicked my ass and reminded me how out of shape I've gotten in the past year.

And now I just ate some delicious ratatouille made by some friends who decided to come over and cook us all dinner, and I'm back to work... calculating the data-entry company's rate of entry-errors to see if we need to re-enter any part of my survey. Woo Stata...

ah man, you have no idea how close I've been a couple times here. I miss having a dog around something fierce. But my home and my lifestyle here are just not conducive to a happy puppy. And no one likes a sad puppy!

Went to Universal Studios Horror Night with my girlfriend for the first time in my life. She usually goes every year.

Wasn't really scary for me knowing they can't touch you. It was like walking around with Star-Power hahaha.
