The Evolution of Jeans: Pictures, Scones and Tea

I waited a year and a half before letting them touch water. I wouldn't recommend this for other jeans but I do recommend this for APC. Basically, wait until they are dirty, or 18 months, whichever comes first.

I soak them in a tub with a spoonful of Woolite dark. No indigo comes out, only starch. Tubwater is yellow lol.

I believe the yellow IS the indigo coming out. Indigo is yellow before it oxidises. Same thig happens with all my jeans when I soak. Water yellow, then when you let it out there is a BLUE mark where the water has been. Either that or it's piss;)

damn those pbjs dont look good at all :\ sorry bro

Well, it's not that they're bad, per se, it's just that they reflect a type of lifestyle that gives him different fades than what you are used to seeing (a.k.a. think of as "good"). There is a whole story behind the fades. What is so "bad" about these jeans?

Your's must be piss...

Don't really know. I've washed jeans in a bath before, and the water went soapy blue, and when i've machine washed the water gets blue. I'm guessing agitation causes more oxidation. Maybe soap also causes bubbles of oxygen, or maybe some of the indigo in jeans is stubborn to be diluted back into the water and stays as blue flakes...i'm really guessing at this point...

yellow = starch

blue = indigo !!!!

Hey felix;) I thought that indigio dilutes into water when you soak it-kinda reversing the chemical reaction though? Thought I read that somewhere....appologies all if I was talking shit though:D

I would bet my money (not all of it... well, all of it at the moment) that the yellowish color doesn't come from the starch. I just soaked my jeans that have already machine washed twice and the water turned yellow. I don't remember me pissing my pants either...

Indigo is not water soluble dude...

You're right!...Just found this..

" Since about 1900, chemists have been able to make synthetic indigo, and because it was cheaper, synthetic dye replaced natural indigo except for some home use or its by crafts specialists (for instance, in kimono dyeing in Japan). Indigo does not require a mordant, but it will not dissolve in water. Consequently, dyers first have to perform a chemical reaction called reduction (deoxidization), changing the indigo molecule to make it soluble. That process turns the solution yellow and in the soluble form indigo is readily taken up by the fabric being dyed."

So maybe Felix is right-maybe it's starch? Or is there a possibility that the type of water you have can effect a chemical reaction with the indigo already present in your jeans? Is that at all possible?

So what the hell is this yellow? Any chemists on here that can explain?

yeah, the yellow is the sizing dude... If your jeans are raw they probably won't lose their sizing all in one home wash. Most jeans I've washed leave seawater-green wash water behind, it's the yellow sizing and bits of indigo that are shedding.... I imagine the really top-quality jeans with stubborn indigo/lots of dips per thread probably leave a more yellowy water....

its sizing or starch

because indigo is blue

nope.

Indigo is not water soluble dude...

yep.

when you wash your denims the water will turn yellow from the starch (especially the first time.)

I wish I could claim these, but they are not my doing. I bought these on eBay about 6 months ago, but thought I would put them up because I thought they had some nice wear.

They are a pair of Jordache from supposedly the late 70's to early 80's. They are about 1 size too small. I can button them, but if I were to sit down, they'd rip. But check out the authentic whiskering and great back pocket fade.

sydney's flatheads are looking amazing!

these are black dukes, i think the lighting makes them appear indigo in the pictures. anyway the blacks are notoriously difficult to break into, and it'll be a long time before there's any fading at all.

about 3.5 months, 1 hot soak and no wash later:

Cross-post from Imperial thread...thought I'd better add to the black Imperial goodness -- plus, don't see too many Kings in here.

I wore the indigo pair pretty much full time for 4.5 - 5 months, then decided I wanted to try the same thing with the black and see how they compared to each other as my own small denim experiment. I think they turned out surprisingly similar, though blue tends to show more depth of colour owing to the various hues that emerge with time. There were minor differences between the two; i.e. the placket just behind the j-stitch on the blues had this little "spur" where the fabric was folded over, and friction from this caused a small hole to start from the inside out...I used indigo thread pulled from the remnants after tthey were hemmed to repair. I've noticed the same thing with Nudies. That feature changed with the blacks, so there's no extra lumps or bumps of fabric to give you a crotch hole (I don't mean the between-the-thighs crotch wear...don't think you can stop that if your legs rub together...)

Also, the pockets on the blacks are ever so slightly smaller and have cross-shaped bar tacks instead of the single diagonal. Small things, but provided in a scientific spirit...heh.

Anyway:

OK
