i wish my parents forced me to take piano lessons.

i envy everyone with natural musical talent.

I was forced to take piano lessons, took them for about 8 years. Just wasn't really into it so I quit. Forcing your kids to do stuff doesn't always work out, they gotta end up enjoying it or be too afraid of you to express an interest in quitting I guess.

i always felt the same way too. i wish my parents forced me into being in ballet or learning to play the piano or violin but they never did. but i decided to start learning to play the accordion recently and they're surprisingly okay with paying for my $50/h private lessons. they're making up for it now and i guess i appreciate it more now than i would when i was a kid. on that note, i left my 80 year old accordion in my room but out of its case, when i woke up this morning my room smelled like a thrift store. ughhh so gross.

Natural musical tallent and the ability to robotically press keys down are two very different things. Most people I know who's parents forced them to take an instrument either don't know how to compose or don't know how to turn a piece of written music into an expression of self. Half of them don't play anymore after their stint with formal instruction ended, either.

Not a jab at technical musical instruction but I can't stress enough that the link between playing and expression (what music actually is) isn't obvious to a small child at all which is likely why they often resent it so much.

I'm in 100% agreement with this.

I know some people who have taken lessons for so long, but cannot improvise or jam. Not to be pompous or anything, but having both natural ability and private lessons, music is so much more than just instruction and reading notes. I totally love that I can jam with people, and have the potential to create songs.

Breaks my heart to see a brother reduced to this.
