i wore my indys today for the first time since march--probably longer than that. after my whites, these guys feel as light as sneakers. still love the whites. i'll give an update sometime soon. they're nicely shined, too. chromexcel actually can become pretty lusty.

Hi- I'm new here, and am curious about a pair of very old, somewhat distressed Red Wing 8248 boots I recently bought second hand. I believe they were made in the early 1990s(according to the ANSI label) and were the women's equivalent of the classic 2268 Engineer Boot-not that I care about the gender thing cos they fit me and look pretty good to me regardless of which sex they were made for. Basically i wanted to know if anyone knows what is the leather type so I can try and restore them- they look as if they were originally a sort of nubuck leather but appear to have been deliberately polished or worn shiny due to wear.

Stitch the pin pin , since this boot not using feather line insole method.

Side skirt(pin pin) layer .

Single leather sole

Whit or whitout rubber sole? any suggestion.

I think you should not use the rubber sole, but you should stain the leather trim. Sometimes I think natural leather looks good, this time I think it'd look better just a tad darker.

Which means from before 1869 :)

Anyway, I also think they would look better with a stained sole.

Once more, this is why Baker/White's needs to get some Natural CXL.

Edit: No fucking way! Kyle, you posted that as I was composing this post. Finally!

Slt@ not sure the time period ..when good year welt is invented,,but for sure this boot is so yesterday. by look at it character #1 pegging entire sole with wooden pegs which is no longer done today #2 ..is 3 initial round eyelet than follow by speed hooks. Most old boot start with 3 eyelet.just my opinion.

The first machine was patented in 1869, invented by Daniel Mills, and followed by later improvements by Goodyear, Mills and Hadley.

Pegged soles are actually not an entirely lost art, although I suppose it's only seen on bespoke shoes now a days.

Even here in little Denmark you can have a bespoke shoe made with pegged soles, albeit by a maker that was originally trained in Bosnia it seems.

Your boots do look rather old for sure. Any idea of the brand?

a restoration, of sorts...pair of battered old(ish) kelso i found in need of some tlc:

a lot of scrubbing and neatsfoot oil later:

the leather is uncracked, despite having been heavily creased and in a fairly dry condition. i'm hoping that the oil, possibly some dubbin, and prolonged use of shoe trees will give them back some of their original shape...

Nice pics Ben . It's good to see a proper post on this thread again. I am not one to stir it . However , there are wasters inputing on this thread .You know who you are ,!! Your banal comments along with the lack of a pair of fkin shoes has become tedious . Apologies Ben for the rant after such a good posting .

Me , well i found a top notch repair shop in my home town , I never knew the guy existed . I was visting my son and took a different route than usual and saw the shop . I knew this was a cool shop when i noticed a number of leather hides hanging close to the door , some with cutouts . A real down to earth guy too . We had a chat for a few mins , i got him to replace some segs on my AS Montrose also . He showed me some of his work , stiched full and half golfer/commando and leather soles . He said he reguarly does veldts too , which surprised me ( though Belfast does have a great military / soldiering tradtion ) On my way home i passed a clothes retailer who I know sells Cheaneys , called in and saw a pair of Tweed boots with a commando sole . I have previously given Cheaney a bit of stick , after viewing some of their more " fashionable " shoe offerings which I thought lightweight . I loved the Tweed grain leather and ski hooks . However the shop wanted £40 more than Cheaney retail and deliver them next day for !! A quick email sorted me out with a pair which should arrive Tuesday . Will post pics on arrival .
