ping speed is latency. It's really a measure of how quickly your ISP resolves from hostname to IP address and from IP address to MAC address.

Upload speed is determined largely by what your ISP caps it at. In theory if you have a REALLY slow computer that could effect it, but your hard drive is typically able to supply data at a MUCH faster rate than your ethernet controller can consume it

sort of - it's a measurement of latency, specifically how long it takes the server to respond (round-trip). hostname resolution does not count; i suppose IP->MAC does but a) that happens at each hop and therefore as dependent on your isp as your wireless router/equivalent and B) is minimal compared to packet processing overhead.

latency tends to measure network response time, whereas bandwidth is mostly determined by the last mile from your isp. i have no idea why this figure is included since only grossly shitty ones (i.e. Uganda, who shares a single 1.5 Mb satellite feed for their entire country's internet link) would affect your bandwidth.

anyway - i'm on a 15/5 plan so definitely can't complain:

Do I win? :)

edit: I have roadrunner at home and I usually get about 16MB down and maybe 6 up. And I just upgraded like last week to (supposedly) 50MBit down speed. Hrm, maybe it's time to stop by their offices and get a newer cable modem.

what da fuck, how does someone get such fast internet speeds???

fuck australian ISP's, they charge you an arm n a leg as well...

It's because that's my work. Columbia is on gigabit ethernet campus-wide. It's pretty sick. Some buildings are now installing fiber channel for end-user ports which will be even faster.

The sad part is it's still too slow in some places, like when a lab needs to move 150 terrabytes of data from one server to another...
