probably wouldn't want to stay around southern cross as there's not much around there.. go around brunswick st, smith st in the brunswick/collingwood area. heaps of vintage stores around that area which have a heap of random shit.

metropolis, readers and avenue are gr8 book stores. there's a heap of record stores around too.
use the train/tram to get around. really easy and cheap.

eating; coffee is pretty much good every where (my favourite is patricia's) and you'll be fine with zomato for cheaper places. try cumulus inc, tipo 00, cutler & co. those are mid tier joints. attica and brae but they're real $$$.

ngv is a must go

i only go to melb like once every 3 years or something, but on my last visit2014? maybe 2015, can't rememberi liked yong's, hihou (even though i don't drink), and neapoli. i actually met homme.homme at the latter for breakfast once.

metropolis is good for design and other wank books but weak (imo) for fiction. still, any bookstore in 2017 is doing god's work. so is magnation, so go there.

i only really went to either brother budan or sensory lab for coffee as my friend worked at SL during the time. i'm sure there are dozens of better places, but i found both convenient + i don't care about filter.

edit: until recently i used to have probably 5-6 people in melbourne that i'd try to meet up with. think i only have one now. next trip will be interesting.

howl Id call southern cross the bottom end of the main streets (Burke St and Collins St). Its more the business side, the big shopping sections start from Elizabeth St heading up towards the top end (Parliament house). The top end of Collins is the boutique's, Bourke in the mid section has the shopping mall, Little Bourke is Chinatown.

Around the Southern Cross station there is the DFO (Direct Factory Outlets) and theres another factory outlet right next to it (forget the name, maybe 'south wharf') Nike/adidas/etc.. thats where all the cheap stuff is. It will be last seasons models at discount.

Id recommend Pellegrini's for eating. Couple of old Italian ladies in the back making homemade pasta. For me the lasagna is the best ive ever had. Might be like $16 but worth it. Its close to the top of Bourke St next to an alley way (Crossley St).

Lonsdale and Latrobe St's are the student area's, uni's and whatnot. King St is where the strip bars are, close to the Melb aquarium. Theres Crown Casino if you dont mind a punt, Flinders St station is the main station in Melbourne. You can walk along the Yarra river and find cafe's, walk up to the Eureka skydeck and have a look at the city.

i'm halfway (was at the time of writing) through my 12-day trip and been getting the hang of the explorations. it's so far been a blast. figured i'd share (at the bottom) some other joints that a friend shared with me which was mega helpful.

~ NGV was sick, you could lose track of time and spend hours there. i actually preferred the AU over the INT whilst I was there.
~ i felt a bit more indulgent for one dinner so i gave Supernormal a shot. The waiting and cooking staff were both super with the service and really accomodating. The hook feature hidden underneath the bar counter was a touch of class for jackets or bags.
~ stayed over a friend's in Footscray for a couple days and touring the town centre in the mornings was great - diverse characters and that.
~ onto that list, i'd give shout outs to Sun Moth and Patricia's, the latter by far over and above my favourite.

enjoyed it very much. jun-july ish trip in the mix probs, hmu.

going to melbourne for almost a week in mid-june, first visit since 2014 or whatever i said earlier in the thread.

t-f i'll be there for work and staying in citadines on bourke, but weekend will be staying with gf in grand hyatt. booked movida and scopri for dinner - reviews seem good for both? tried to book tipo00 but apparently the waiting list for a weekend booking is two plus months. on the topic, melb is super weird with restaurant reservations in that hardly anyone seems to offer them for groups of less than 6 or so.

howl/david, if you around and wanna meet up for coffee or whatever in (super) early morning or evening let me know. fyi i will most likely be haggard due to overwork and decked out in 90% uniqlo office attire. at least it will be cold.

great list howl.. i'm melbourne born and bred and haven't been to more than half of the list. definitely agree with patricia's. hands down the best coffee in melbourne and the staff are awesome. i'm pretty lucky for it to be next to my office block!

had a work function at supernormal a few years back and the roof panels started collapsing. i rate cumulus and cutler and co (mcconnell's other joints) more in terms of experience.

conq: always heard good things about movida and scopri, both are oldish spots so i would expect it to be pretty consistent. have been wanting to go to tipo for a while now but after calling 2/3 times i realised that i don't care enough to book that far in advance. they now have a sister restaurant next door which is apparently decent.. generally a half an hour wait i've heard - pretty much the same for all decent places in melbourne if you have less than 6 people.

are you still living in canberra working in the pubsec? pm me on whirlpool. we can set something up prior or after work.

i just realised that i've pretty much repeated myself from my post above.

other foods spots off the top of my head: desert house (hk), don dons (jp) and sushi monger (jp/kr) for cheap eats, manchester press for basic bitch brunch, chin chin for more asian fusion. broadsheet is pretty much the go to guide for food.

i met david10d. he is a nice dude, although his future gf in the shoe store got jealous when she saw us holding hands. looking forward to a wedding invite.

stayed at citadines on bourke for work which was way better than i expected. on the weekend i was at the grand hyatt which was nice, next time (?) i should try park hyatt instead. ate at scopri (perhaps the best italian restaurant i've been to in australia? if not, at least tied with pendolino in sydney) and movida (also fantastic).

going to sydney next weekend. wanted to stay at the langham, but sheraton on the park was like $350 cheaper so i couldn't justify the difference. trying to decide between sagra, mazzaro, or pasta emilia.

went to sydney and ate at:

- sokyo.
- sagra.
- mr. wong.

all fantastic and highly recommended. also got vol 1 of beams at home from kinokuniya which i've wanted for a while.

on the topic of design, muji is opening in canberra this week. naoto fukasawa is giving a 'presentation' which i've booked tickets for ($2 or something) during the first few days, i'm curious as to what it'll be like.
