Quite a few folks here might know I've had my head down recently trying to finish a book on David Bowie. And on a trip up North this weekend to see the folks, we decided to stop off in Tadcaster - where Bowie's dad grew up.

I always thought this was a grim, Northern mill town. How wrong I was. It's beautiful. As I took this pic, an old fella in a flat cap told me that the railway viaduct in the distance is one of the finest examples of stone masonry in the country.

Viewfromabridge.jpg

It's a tiny town, which I did know was dominated by several old breweries. So the first thing we did was stop at a pub for lunch. No pics, as it makes you look like a tourist, but this was the Britannia, right by the river, cheap pub food, red-faced friendly, talkative locals, and beer that was made a few hundred yards away that tasted like the nectar of the Gods.

I lost count of how many pubs there were in the tiny town. You could visit three a day and it would still take a week to get through them. THis one is looks good too:

AngelandWhiteHorse.jpg

There are two major breweries here: John Smith, a huge more corporate affair, and Samuel Smith - a terrific, smaller brewery whose beers are excellent quality and always keenly-priced. If you're in London, look for a Sam Smith pub and you won't get scalped. There's an earlier wayjdt of mine that shows an amazing Sam SMith pub in Beverley , roughly 50 miles from here.

These two brewery buildings are un-marked, I suspect they're John Smith:

This is the Samuel Smith HQ< with the brewery chimney poking up behind.

After a while, you get to notice in England, that at the same time the Georgians and Victorians built breweries, they'd also build Methodist Chapels - to try and turn the workers away from the demon drink.

Methodistchapel.jpg

Damn, one things about the town is I didn't see any dogs. Sorry, Lendo. Anyway, here are my SDA - flattering, aren't they, they show off the distorted growth over my knee very nicely. Beerlovelybeer.jpg

It was a flying trip; here you can see the gates to York, where we stayed that night. It was a royalist town, subjected to a three month siege during the civil war. Because all the participants were related, they ended the siege politely, shaking hands, without trashing the city. Castle.jpg

Before that, having been built by the Romans, it was attacked by Vikings. We spotted a few, trying to look 'hard'. But we know they're not hard. Why? They're wearing warm clothes. In Yorkshire, if you're hard, you go out in the winter, snow or no, dressed in a T-shirt or a thin, pastel-coloured dress and high heels. Vikings.jpg

The area's great for kids. Castles, vikings, and some of the gas stations have all mod cons - including a Tardis!

Tardis.jpg

Anyway, like Frankie said, it's nice to go travelling... but it's oh, so nice to come home. Especially when you have purchases to unwrap. Cheers!

@ Paul

thx for the reply,... those really do look great,... but i can´t help it, somehow i limit myself in buying levis´s,... i love the 55 for it´s loser fit and to me those are as authentic as one can get,... maybe i should give another brand a try but also i love to stay with one or maximum two pairs for a while,... so i have not to put so many miles in each to get a nice fading, hahaha

for now i have the 55 and a 33, the later i only soaked so far and wore for a a day or two,... considering selling them, cause they only look good to me worn with suspenders and i am not young enough anymore to go this route,... see, i am a levis person by heart ;-)

(used my shoulderbag this time)

i also stopped at Urban Outshitters, saw a really nice brown canvasbag there,it was on sale from 65,- down to 25,-.a closer inspection showed that all the leatherparts are made from cheap plastic, the hardware was also beyond quality.wtf are they think? they also sell battered second hand shoes for exorbitant prices atm,not sure if i will stop there again.

Paul: Those pictures are incredible. Your posts always kind of bum me out though because of how much I miss the UK.

Aw, thanks guys. I've spent so much of my life exploring the US, I only realised a few years ago that I knew it better than the UK, which I appreciate more now. If you'da told me when I was 20 that I'd fall in love with Tascaster I'd have punched you in the mouth.

But weirdly, I think more of the UK is being lost, homogenised ,than the US. In, oh, Michigan, the Carolinas, Florida, it's the 'burbs that have become generic. In Bath, York, Lincoln, Bromley, it's the very centres that have all become the same, with Starbucks, Gap, Carphone Warehouse, the same depressing identikit franchises, and all the old junk, book, and thrift stores being wiped out. So hurray for Tadcaster.

Where are you from jstavrin? Hulme?

Oh, I'm from the US but I studied in London last year. Honestly though, I've never felt more at home and not a day (hour) goes by when I don't think about my time there. Unfortunately my desired career sort of requires that I be in LA for a little while so I can't go back just yet.

same here,Paul. Its called gentrification:the old-established shops, flatrenters are recklesslypushed beside by more powerful (read wealthy) social climbers.its happens in all so-called "in-areas" here, mine including.more and more boring all-the-same chain shops, rents are going up that much, that people with a mediocre income(like me) can hardly afford it anymore.its like a plague, that cant be stopped.worst is that its all supported by the green party here,i fuckin hate these cunts right now.since the last election they made sure they will never get my vote again.

Too freakin' right. What's worst where I am is everyone who lives here, if they own their house, think they're rich because it's worth more. Idiots. Because if you sell, where do you go? And if you stay.... more cellphone shops.

After yesterday's snowfall, we decided to take the pups ( 8 months old & still growing!) for a long walk. The trails were beautiful with fresh snow, and all was quiet.

The snow was heavy & wet, so we dressed accordingly...

We kriss-crossed the river numerous times over bridges
