^Mmmmm... BBQ.....

More of that crazy Shanghai architecture from People's Park and around...

Good spot for a beer inside the Park (which was huge). Moroccan-themed bar/cafe/restaurant right on the lake.

img4428b.jpg

Lots of kite-flying near the Municipal Building, some more successful than others.

Went out to Shintori for dinner. Minimalist/industrial interior with an open kitchen and amazing Japanese-inspired food.

We walked down this extremely dark bamboo-lined path to be greeted by a big black wall and assumed the place was closed, until somebody was leaving and we realised the wall was actually a sliding door.

img4475a.jpg

img4436b.jpg

Most of the restaurant was a large U-shaped mezzanine with glass walls. You can see the paper lantern-inspired dumbwaiters (on the left) to move the dishes upstairs.

img4458k.jpg

Downstairs was only a couple of tables, the kitchen, and a sushi bar.

img4461x.jpg

The food:

img4442y.jpg

Buttered mushrooms on asparagus

img4443y.jpg

Miso-grilled mackerel (I think it was mackaerel...)

img4448g.jpg

Grilled pork teriyaki... Mmmmm...

Went to People 7 next door for a drink after dinner. The entrance to this place was even more confusing than the Shintori door. The place has no signage whatsoever and this is all you can see in the dark:

img4489w.jpg

With a bit of flash, you can see the door, but no indication of how to get inside. We were chatting with a guy outside who was meeting a friend inside and he confessed that he'd heard the place was literally hard to get into. We never did figure out how you get the door open, we just ducked in behind a couple leaving.

img4488w.jpg

And had some delicious cocktails in one of the darkest bars I've ever been in. The only illumination was provided by the back lighting of the shelves and a few tealights

Took a Fam. road trip today. Went about two hours west to Salina, KS - birthplace of Lee Jeans in 1889. I guess the Lee Fam. still pumps in money to the community.

Drove 30 min. south to the Swedish town of Lindsborg. Checked out an art gallery owned by a National Geographic photographer named Jim Richardson.

Went up to a lookout called Coronado Heights, a WPA structure. The wind was gusting about 50 mph. You can see for about 20 miles in any direction, but you know what you are looking at goes on for another 500.....right Robbie?

Happy U.S. Memorial Day!

great stuff. I didn't know about the WPA building, is it in Lindsborg? We came through on Sunday headed south to Oklahoma. Should have tried to message you we might of been able to have a mini-meetup.
