Clothing for The Great Outdoors

vat is a tax that only applies to residents of the european union

People outside the EU do not have to pay for it. Normally, when you see prices for online EU shops, VAT is included or if its not, it is stated as so.

The shipping charges that can be incurred when shipping from one country to another is called the customs charge and this fee usually is based on the original price of the good.

can you outdoorsy heads help me out here?

i'm travelling around the midwest in january for 11 days and im scared my EG parka isnt going to cut it. i want to stay warm but be able to move around and not be completely stifled by a massive coat.

i checked out a parka at Fjallraven which I was pretty pleased with, but i have no idea about their quality, and whether there is a better alternative for the price (the one i saw was 795 which seems steep).

tldr version: fjallraven = good or bad for the price? is there a cheaper-but-still-high-quality coat out there?

So i got one of the manastash my morning jackets. Thing is real nice. Cool construction, is quite warm, comes with a next level stuff sack to pack it in. I dropped it off at their office for a size exchange and someone jacked it.

FUUUUUUCKKKKK. Always ship back so its on someone else!

customer service at 2jupiters has been real good in helping sort it out.

What Fjallraven parka is 795? I remember the most expensive piece being the down coat (700-ish), which is definitely the most hardcore down jacket I have ever seen but can't imagine needing unless I'm out hiking in below zero temps.

The Fjallraven parkas I bought for my parents were good for $300 on sale last year but imho Fjallraven retail is a ripoff. I'd just layer thermals and fleece/down shirt under your EG or get a Canada Goose parka and save 2 bills.

The Arktis parka http://www.fjallraven.com/outdoor-equipment/Jackets/Arktis-Parka

Warmest thing I've ever tried on. Thanks for the tip though. I'll just try and layer my way through it.

You can get this for $50 cheaper at Context. The previous version of this parka is actually the one I bought for my parents. Same design except it was filled with synthetic microloft instead of actual down. Retail was around $500. Even with the down that's a pretty big price increase.

Someone stole it out of their office? How does that happen?

Or you left it in a box outside their office, on the sidewalk? (5)

I left it in front of their door inside an office building with mail, i figured it would be fine.

Update-the fucking mail dude delivered it back to my house. So it didnt get swoop'd.

Getting the large soon and will post pix. The quality of construction and material was pretty impressive, and the ripstop material is like any other ripstop- subtle grid woven into the fabric.

Primaloft is in a lot of jackets out there, its a good material as its synthetic and does not retain water like down. I cant speak to the eco-pertex aspect, but i would assume it would not retain water as well, and the jacket compresses well. The stuff sack included is pretty rad, its made of the same ripstop/fleece stuff.

^Interested in seeing the Epperson Mountaineering packs in person. Hickorees stocked one as well. There were some Rivendell Mountain Works mentions earlier in the thread--anyone pick one of those up recently?

Cheap plug--selling a Crescent Down Works for APC vest in olive 60/40. Taking offers! Need cash.

i got a rivendell then sold it, it wasnt what i had expected. Not to say its not good product it just wasnt for me. Made profit on ebay selling to someone in japan though :D

Just got a blk pine workshop backpack, nice sturdy bag. solid material, good leather accents. Not as big as i hoped, but its more of a day to day laptop thing than a daypack.

I have a Rivendell in custom black and blue and I love it.

It's very light, extremely comfortable on my back and I can carry a ton of stuff in it. I bike a fair lot and it is actually a lot more comfortable than a messenger bag.

I still want one of the Altadena packs though.

yea read about that^^^ on hiking in finland blog. Looks nice to me.

Finally pulled the trigger on Kalttermusen Einride from Unterwegs in Germany. Awaiting its arrival eagerly. Communication was on point with the store, but shipping thru DHL international is taking way longer than expected. Fuckin Garbstore raising my expectations for international mailorder with their 2.5 day order-to-door timing. Oh well...it'll get here.

and I still want a rivendell. Looks like a great new bag for the money. and to dude who has one and still wants an Altadena...save your dough. Its got the looks, and mine has held up for a year and change, but it is ultimatly NOT very well designed for load-bearing, and well....it's a fucking pack for christ sake, what else should it be for?

And finally when did they reinvent epperson? Jesus, without the internet I cant even keep pace anymore. My dad thinks all this stuff being en vogue alla sudden is super funny, and tho i love it, I'm inclined to agree

Word.

I have been itching to buy their Humboldt jacket. Anybody have any experience with their waterproof jackets? Sastruga is on its way and customer service is on point.

Anyone dealing with 0*F weather? There are nights when this has happened and I'm sort of lost as to what to wear.

I have a puffy jacket but I'm thinking about returning it. I'm contemplating getting a down vest and it'd be more versatile..thoughts?

when it gets down to temperatures like that, it's really all about layering for me. i'll throw on a thermal, oxford, flannel, then put an EG hoodie over that, and finally throw on my crescent vest or barbour ... always does the trick for me.

That's pretty legit. I'll do a similar routine but yank the oxford and do long johns and a uniqlo heattech for the baselayer.

heattech is so legit. i grabbed one of those knit caps from the woodlands shop a couple weeks ago and its been great so far. 15 bones is a hell of a deal.

also, for anyone in NYC looking for some crescent stuff, check out cube on 7th between 1st and A (couple doors down from porchetta). last time i was there they had a few italian vests and a couple jackets for GREAT prices. my buddy picked up this beaut for $200 (only other place i've seen it is on rakuten for almost 6 bills):
