Military use of blue denim

Recommended Posts

this is pretty cool. are those epaulettes or a collar? this would probably be worn under a coat which would tell rank.

Hi tweeds...I took the photos and made notes from the info at the exhibition; in the display cards the denim details were described as 'epaulettes' though, I agree, they form part of the collar. I do remember this particular piece was a keep-sake loaned by the wife of the serviceman who'd worn it... I'll check back and see if I have any other info on it, like his rank...

Edit: Finally sourced the original info from the exhibition (which will be on display in Portsmouth, UK. in January), here it is:

'Title: Royal Navy Jersey Tunic, regulation issue, dark blue oiled wool with pale blue denim epaulettes

Date: Probably mid 20th century

Caption: Standard issue for naval rating; although the denim tags occupy a small area of this tunic, they flag the associations between denim and masculine ideals of courage and the adventurous spirit. Worn by Reginald Woodward who saw active service in WWII, his uniform was carefully preserved by his widow.'

Like the "barber shop" picture from those South Pacific Life magazine shots. A very interesting assortment of young enlistees and dusty looking salts (in particular the two dudes with the graying horseshoes, though the tattooed barber is obviously no spring chicken either). Very neat slice of daily life.

Lovely jacket. That denim looks very like Cone Deep Tone.

Great thread, of course. I might have mentioned this before but a coupl e of the early SF denim manufcatrers, including Can't Bust Em I think, had bell bottoms as a staple of their line and major moneyspinner, from the WWI era onwards.
