HARDCORE SAVED MY LIFE

Recommended Posts

co-signed although this doesn't do them anywhere near enough justice!

I bought that cd on the off chance because it had Shit in the title when i was about 16, and it was mind blowing. It's hard to imagine what the hardcore(and alot of the more related genres) would have become without bands like Born Against, just so angry and reckless sounding, even on record.

I can't begin to imagine how crazy it would have been live!

Citizens Arrest is harsh too. I think Born Against can sometimes sound a little dated but imagine if Citizens Arrest re-recorded today, it would knock lumps out of people.

I told 'em you wouldn't be far if Born Against was mentioned again!

But wait...BA sounds dated to you? I'm not sure I understand...haha...I mean it's been 15+ years or so...they were definitely ahead of their time when they were together. Dated as in song structure or recording quality...I think either is surely debateable, no?

Still to this day...the lyrics in those songs stand out to me as being in a league of their own...also love the fact that there wasn't an obvious rhyme at the end of every bar or AB-AB pattern, the words read more like a stream of consciousness venting absolute hatred for whatever. Granted it's very different and NOT anything that is extremely catchy/chorus-oriented (not even on an old school DC level).

Dwayne from Citizens Arrest does vox for some BLack Metal band now...it's exactly what I consider "not my cup o tea"...gutterals all day...but he seems like he's having fun with it. Forgot the name.

I knew this would come up when I was typing it out...

Don't think I can quite justify myself properly here, other than that I feel very aware that I am listening to an older record/band when I listen to Born Against these days although I don't intend to discredit how great those records are or how influencial.

I think it is a combination of the song structures and the recording quality as you've said but in the most part it is that bands have taken those ideas forward. Be it the 31G sort of bands or Gravity records or you could even say a band like Converge, and they've executed which ever part they have taken on with a fresher tilt. You'd not get a band copying what Born Against did directly now, would you?

Where as, with say Citizens Arrest, what they are doing is still very comparable today.

Does that make any sense?

I listen to more punk/garage than hardcore but I really like fast 80s HC like pretty much everything on No Way and Deranged's hardcore releases. I also like the more rocking Scandinavian stuff like Skitkids and Hjertestop. Here are a few bands that I've really been enjoying lately, in no particular order:

Double Negative

Government Warning

Under Pressure

Strung Up

Career Suicide (just keep getting better)

Also, to add something to the current topic, I picked up the double 8" from Wrangler Brutes a while back and while I haven't played it recently, I really did like it and I think I will have to take it out soon for another listen.

My friend is putting out a dvd of the fucked up weekend that happened back around the end of october (I helped film). It will have some Double Negative/CS stuff on it as well as Sex vid, Mind Eraser, Brutal Knights and of course Fucked up (with some more bands..I don't know if he'll put the No Warning cover Millenial Reign did)

Check it out here for pre-orders soon http://stuckinthecity.wordpress.com/fucked-up-dvd/

Sorry if this has been mentioned already.

Yeah I see where you're coming from with that. For the recording style...I actually like the slight dirtiness of those records (even when done at DOn FUry's)...it doesn't really say dated to me...but it does help encapsulate the sound of that band in particular. I wouldn't want to hear them crazy mic'd up or as finessed in the mix as Ceremony (okay I would just cause it'd be new material...but I'd prefer the older recording style).

I also think that bands these days have moved on to other styles...or just never were about that type of sound that BA and the like were doing (ironically, "moved on" does not actually mean progressing passed...most of today's newfangled hc is shit to me...but it IS different than what we're talking about here...that's for sure). I dunno I'm going off on a tangent...in some ways I think if BA were to come out today for the first time, with the same songs and recording style...I'd still dig the shit as much. Bands these days just don't sound like that at all for one reason or another.

I was going to mention the mid-90's/San Diego'ish stuff (as you said, Gravity and 31G mainly...GSL (obviously) and Ebullition also pop up in my head)...in comparison or under the influence of BA to some extent...great shit all around. I would say that BA represents chaotic, but not total outofyourgoard hardcore...well Sam was vocally...the band was more melodic which made for a great contrast. Citizens Arrest, as a whole, has more of that spazzy, unhinged, powerviolence'esque thing going...a style that is definitely still prevalent today...also standing alongside the more frantic mid-90's stuff of Gravity and 31G.

Both were (are still) incredible, influential bands to me.

I just want to see the Mind Eraser footage; I heard that place turned into a madhouse for that band.

I also heard that people were booing Fucked Up, while they were trying to film

crime in stereo's new stuff is weird, they played in philly a month or two back and no one was into their new stuff at all

no one really likes cis overall,

but they are my favorite 2nd band in hardcore today

the first LP is great

ive probably seen them about 15 times as well

in philly they get a much much better reaction than NJ

i went to philly shows for a while (i went to villanova for 4 years)

Uoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Would rep you back...I've gotta spread eagle before repping you again apparently. Was just listening to them late last night and after I got outside today (before the Infest and No Comment).

It's been a long time since I listened to any of the "original" Power Violence type stuff but I do feel like I need to revisit it, especially Man is The Bastard who I seem to have over looked somewhat the first time around.

I've been getting my very fast//very slow screamy kicks elsewhere for too long I think.

Ironclad are a new local band very much in the Youth Crew revival style, not a million miles away from the Bridge9 bands. I think they are pretty good and worth a look if Right Brigade or Carry On were your thing.

Yeah I need me some Man Is The Bastard material actually. Good call on that one.
