if the artist is only halfway decent then he'll probably only do a halfway decent job

That's a good one.

Just wondering,

Do a lot of people opt for that kind of tattoo? Is it like Owl Tattoo Syndrome where one day everyone decided owl tattoos were sick (because they are) but now you can't get one because everyone has an owl tattoo?

you mean like this?

homeowl.gif

also, pirate/sail ships in stormy waters with the octopus attackin or somethin kinda played (but i think they still look dope)

Does anyone know of any artist in New Jersey who specialize in old school/sailor tattoos? My cousin was telling me about an artist, but I can remember his name.

My boy John Jankowski does some tight stuff at Rock City tattoo in Belleville.

Thanks Dead_Wizard. He wasn't the guy that I was looking for, but I did find the shop that I was looking for in Bradly Beach. I might have to keep him in mind though, even though he is a little bit out of the way.

^^^^ are you talking about electric tattoo??

Yeah that is the place. I've bee fascinated with classic sailor tattoos lately. Not the Ed Hardy type stuff, but the classic stylings of Sailor Jerry and Lyle Tuttle. I was considering getting Japanese style tattoos for the longest time, but because I work within a mile radius of four tattoo shops, I've discovered that it's too common and not really what I want. However, there are a few regular customers who come in who have many amazing classic tattoos, very close to what xchen has and it has sparked interest in getting one. However, the only problem with me is what artist I have to choose. I ever go through with it , it's going to be one of those guys.

I think that Durer piece would look awesome more graphically (IE, little/no shading) but if you get a black-and-grey or portrait tattoo specialist they would be able to translate that quite accurately.

You don't necessarily have to shop every tattoo, but sometimes you gotta pick a specialist whom isn't necessarily versatile, but is great at certain things.

My two cents.

Seconded.

Robert Ryan did my chest piece, and its fucking rad.

Nicest dude too.

My cousin has all his work done there and has gotten something from all the dudes.

Mike is probably your best bet if you're looking for something classic though.

... if you need something surreal/occult/out-of-this-world, then Robert is definitely your man, haha.

If you want to support up-and-comers, John Poverty and Geoff Horn are getting better and better... although I'm not sure where either of them work right now.

One of my friends got his sleeve done there. Its radical.

I've been obsessed with classic sailor tattoos for a while. Like getting a blue star on your left ear for traveling over 5,000 miles. and a blue star on your right for traveling over 10,000. 3 dots or scores on the forehead to indicate traveling around the cape more than twice... getting a pig on one foot and a rooster on another to "prevent" drowning, rope around the wrist to signify working as a deck-hand.

Im also into russian prison tattoos (as mentioned previously), and hobo tattoos from the 20's. Alot of old train bums used to have DIE ALONE tattooed on one of their forearms.

I've been looking for resources on more old bum tattoos but cant find any decent ones. Help.

Thanks MyAcademy, I will keep that in mind when I finally decide to go. Also, is there a long wait for either of those artist?

Awesome post, I am definitely interested in stuff like that, but it seems like it is pretty difficult to find a good consolidated source of that kind of information...I will keep my eyes open though for sure.

I can't speak for Mike, but I called and set up my appointment with Robert in the middle of the week, and then a week and a half afterwards I was in there on a Saturday.

Went back after 3 weeks to get color, and again, no problems setting anything up.

Itchin' to go back again, haha.

Thanks man, I'll have to take a ride down that way in the near future and see the shop.

the thing i like about prison tattoos is also they tell the story of the mans life

That's why the image and placement I want is relevant to my life and character... I'm not that big of a numbskull, but numb none the less.

Got this today for $20 in my buddy's kitchen
