Given that I think Face/Off is one of the best (and smartest) action films of all time, I was so excited to pick this up in a video store in Asia. I had really good things about this film and it didn't disappoint. At first I was really surprised with some of his formal decisions but by the end of this film I was completely down with it. So good.

I've been trying to watch films that are somewhat similar formally to the short I'm shooting this summer. So, this film was definitely on my list. This was the first time I was really watching with an eye for the directorial choices and it made appreciate this so much more. It's become less of a Day-Lewis film for me; P.T.A. is really controlling every aspect of this film.

Had more time to kill on the airplane so I watched this. Not much to say about it: nothing really goes on here. I haven't been this disinterested in a while. I also really am over Clooney (if I really liked him in the first place).

The American, 2010

I have two more legs of my flight so I'll probably watch a couple of the Jia Zhangke films I got in China.

Doco about Ayrton Senna. Nuff said. Told primarily through archive footage.

The life and times of Roger Corman. Producer of 396 films, all made on shoestring budgets. Nearly all of them commercially successful. Jack Nicholson got his start working on/in Corman's films. As did Martin Scorcese, Dennis Hopper, Ron Howard, Peter Fonda, and more...

Not what I was expecting at all, still pretty awesome. Coming-of-age apocalypse survival tale as a small group seeks refuge from zombie-like vampires and Christian fanatics.

I don't know if it's because i've had some emotional moments lately or because I really like the man, but i cried at the end. /superconfessional

Watched this from Osaka to Alaska. Slowly, and without realizing out, Jia Zhangke has become one of favorite directors. I'm pretty impressed how he manages to tease out consistent themes in films that don't have the same plots at all. I started with his later work and have worked my way to the beginning. If anyone is looking for films with a slow but appropriate rhythm and a real sense of "place," check him out. Worth it.

I'm assuming you meant invented here.

According to that Luke Wilson movie the internet was basically invented to mass-distribute porn. I dunno though, I was super drunk when I saw that thing.

Anyways, I pulled it up on Pirate Bay a while ago and the seed to leecher ratio was like 1:8.... that coupled with the shit internet pretty much secured I'll be watching it tomorrow.

I was pleasantly surprised with this. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would given the advertising campaign. There are moments when I think the film becomes a little too kitschy but overall it's a solid, well directed film. Plus it's nice to see Ewan McGregor act in a role where he's kind of failure and learning. He's actually quite good. And I could look at Melanie Laurent all day.
