I have a Panerai logo (PAM 005). I am hooked with the watch! Although it is made with "just" an ETA movement, the 44mm case, the black dial, military style watch design just blows me!

There are a bunch of hardcore loyalists called Paneristis. Checkout Paneristi.com.

The strap changing will surely give you the kicks since you could mix and match it with what you're wearing. I, personally have owned 3 Panerais and 7 straps (and counting!).

The watch is addicting! If only I had the money, I will get a Radiomir Base 210 and a Submersible 2500mm (PAM 194) special edition with a 47mm lug!

The 194 (2004 Diver's Watch of the year) - $8,750:

My PAM 005 logo - considered entry level collector's item - ($3,500):

The Radiomir Base - the most representative of the original Panerai of the 1940s - PAM 210 - $4,050:

One reason why I got into expensive clothing is because I can't afford to shell out $20k for these beauties.

But there are times, I wear these:

I have a G-shock 20th anniversary edition with a red LED display.

Hey y'all,

What are people's opinions on the Dior watches? I'm not normally one for watches made by designers as opposed to actual watchmakers, but I like the clean look of the Dior ones..

I'm talking about these: http://www.eluxury.com/browse/product_assortment.jhtml?SectionID=7000&CategoryID=7067&SubCategoryID=7194&ClassificationID=7231

After reading a bit about watches on Google I'm shocked that quartz watches don't seem to last a long time (because of battery leaks?) and that the only way to get a good watch is to get an automatic (that never shows the time precisely and you always have to wind every morning) is that so? Maybe I should check the time looking at the sun...

You don't have to wind an automatic. Pretty much all mechanical watches you will find these days has a full rotor automatic movement unless you get a specialty watch. And almost all Automatics have a 25 jewel ETA movement that is modified by the watch house. Most 3 register chronographs since the 70's have an auto ETA Valjoux 7750.

Carpe Denim! (not the jean brand silly!)

Sadly, this is a decision I have to make too, as my 1950s Heuer Automatic (not a chrono) - a great, simple classic that I've owned for around 15 years, has finally worn out. For looks, I would go for another Heuer (not a Tag Heuer), but want a simple, Oyster-looking one, with a decent movement that won't wear out. I like the Monaco (altho not the Tag Heuer reissue), but it's too big for my skinny arms. Any recommendations, Sk8r, anyone? What's the movement like on the original Carreras?

I will be flogging some of my deadstock Valencia-made LVC and selvage Lees on the 'Bay to fund this, btw, so it ain't OT!

I would side with Geowu. pocket watches are the way to go. I have an old railway pocket watch by hamilton that is still working and only loses about a minute every month or so. I have to wind it once a day, but heh, that's the price you pay for style, huh. They are very nice watches that can be found on ebay for less than a hundred dollars.

I actually just bought a new watch today after using the 1960 rolex air king that my dad gave me a few years ago, that was actually lost in snow for over 3 months then found again WORKING, so whoever is saying that Rolex's are not great quality, I dont think I could ever expect more than that in the way of quality. As for my new watch a got a Klaus Kobec Couture Sports Steel DIAMOND, which is not exactly in the same price range that most of you are talking about but is definitely one of the best looking watches Ive seen. I bought it from www.timepiecesUSA.com but here are some better pictures from an ebay auction (which I have no affiliation with) http://cgi.ebay.com/Klaus-Kobec-Couture-Sports-Steel-DIAMOND-Gents_W0QQitemZ5032227899QQcategoryZ111683QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I recently purchased the watch above and like it very much. Not to flashy. Has a 80's country club look to it. I had an old casio databank for many years. But it finally broke. So I started looking for something a bit nicer but in the same 70's-80's vain. Originally I thought I would get something completely different. I really love old military watches. Especially this one but it was too pricey.

They have a very minimal classic look to me. Other brands such as Bulova, Hamilton, Elgin...

are a more affordable.

Also there is a band I have been listening to quite a bit lately called Clap Your Hands Say Yea.

The old military style watches are cool. If you can't afford the Panerai, check out Anonimo, they make some cool watches and they used to be affiliated with Panerai so I think they use the same movements but I could be wrong. I picked up this bad boy:

http://www.oris.ch/images/watches/classic/miles_chrono/large/675_7532_40_61_MB.jpg

Sometimes I think it is way too flashy and way too big but I still like it. It is a good quality watch and it feels solid. Worth checking out.
