you take photos of the same object in different exposure modes and put them into a program. then you convert them to hdr (high dynamic range). Then you tweak it to your personal likings. What i meant by trying it out was tweaking the saturation levels and other stuff. the program i used is called Photomatix. It takes 2 minutes to download and install. It's $100 but if you message me.... i can change that.

alright, i demand to know what this portal-to-a-parallel-dimension-looking thing is in the middle of the picture. is it just another building? i love it. looks like aliens are about to pop straight out and ravage the city

yea some building, I dont know how it stands out so strongly as I only edited brightness and contrast :o

how is hdr different than playing around with shadows + highlights?

Bigger dynamic range to play with, but it's currently just a bandwagon like off camera flash and stuff. I've only seen it done well a few times.

most pepople are doing it to pictures that don't need it.

This. It's the new lense flare, considering it can be done basically by taking image A (if shot in Raw) and just putting it through an HDR program.

One tip I have for doing HDR, try it in scenes where you lose dynamic range for a single photo, for example, doing a sunset where you'll have to expose for the sky and lose ground detail, or expose for the ground and lose the sky detail. HDR offers a quick way to keep all the dynamic range, and as long as you don't overdo it, you can get a great photo. But of course, my opinon's worthless, so play with it anyway you like. :)

edit ; and for you technical heads, here's a layman's guide as to the basics of HDR. http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/high-dynamic-range.htm

maybe it's just b/c of the content, but i feel like the photos from your compact are better than the one from your 400d.

^ do you make prints your self??? how do to get the sides printed like that?

for color negs you can just print full frame traditionally (if you have access to a c-printing lab) to get the borders.
