I really like his more peripheral work. Fates Worse than Death is another great read.

(re)reading this, and will probably pick up Whoreson again as well. It's easy reading but always worth revisiting.

Yeah definitely check out American Gods first. Anansi Boys isn't a sequel but each share a character and take place in the same universe. Better to read American Gods first though because it sets up and pulls you into that universe a bit more. They're really quick and easy reads, more reminiscent to Sandman than his other books.
