Inherited this very cool Soviet watch, don’t know much about it but I really like the look. It keeps time really well and even has a mechanical alarm! The twisty hand sets the alarm time and the top knob winds it up, and it buzzes (for quite a while depending on how much you’ve wound it) when the hour hand aligns with it. So cool!7 points

Precautionary, but the chainstitching was coming apart. Kinda weird too, the outer jean inside chainstitch; while the inner jean, the inner chainstitch. So basically both of them were coming apart and only a matter of time before a gaping hole would have opened up, no doubt at the most unfortunate time. The denim isn't looking like it's getting any holes there, though. Knee, wallet, phone on the other hand...7 points

Sheesh! ^ ha, I’ve probably worn mine about 85% of days since this started, probably biked about 700 miles in mine, washed them close to 10 times and I don’t have close to that level of wear. Except I do have a big crotch darning job - waiting for that accounts for about 10% of the days I haven’t worn them. Same seam issues as you but it happens on pretty much every pair when I’m bike commuting.3 points

I was able to get 2"/5cm shrinkage in the waist and 1/2 to 1" in all other measurements on a pair of W36 220A. I soaked in extremely hot (seemed like it was almost boiling) water for an hour, occasionally agitating by hand. Then a hot machine wash and electric dryer. This process caused the patch to lose a lot of ink, but the leather remains in decent shape. If that's something that would bother you, be careful. Even after all the shrinkage, the 220A will continue to have an unusually high rise compared to the rest of the measurements. Not necessarily bad, just different. The denim is really cool though and I would embrace any marbling - it suits them.2 points

Just from the pre soak fit I didn’t have much hope, usually I can stick a hand in my waist band, if I tried these in person I would have sized down for sure. I wasn’t shipping these back to hinoya so I had nothing to lose. is it worth throwing in the washing machine and dryer? I don’t want any dreaded marbling. I assume they’ll stretch out back to loose regardless. here’s some pre soak photos for now2 points

I’m not happy about the tariffs, for any number of reasons—but the yen is more than 15% weaker now, relative to the dollar, than it was when I first started buying most of my clothes from Yahoo + Mercari. I felt like I was getting a great deal, then, and I’m pretty sure I’ll still feel like I’m getting a great deal if I have to start paying 15% more again now. We’ve been spoiled for the last few years. I’m maybe less likely to buy new clothes at full MSRP, but I already didn’t do a ton of that. I mostly just wish the extra tax was going to a decent cause.2 points

I live near the heart of the auto industry and any time I run into the white collar workers who are in it it doesn’t take long for them to mention how this is…not helping. I can’t imagine how it might be for small businesses who thrive on imports. That said I do think there is merit to the problem of the fast fashion sites from Japan’s neighbor abusing the de minimis and flooding the world with plastic trash. I’m not sure how it would go with used items.2 points

As August usually is here. The dead of summer. All goes sort of quiet because people stay indoors mostly when it’s not dark. It’s been mostly routine stuff - office, baby stuff, sunset dog walks etc. no jeans in site for a month now. Cloud makers. Upside down for some reason decent steak from a few days ago. Also, a friend of mine opened the first denim shop in our parts. Very nice store and much more convenient now that I can go and try on stuff in person and buy it, rather than DM brands on IG about how they measure thigh width. I bought this Pherrows Henley.2 points

Off work this week, took a day trip to Mackinac Island today. Mackinac Island is a historically significant car-free island technically in Lake Huron, one of the 5 Great Lakes. Lake Michigan ‘flows’ into Lake Huron through the Straights of Mackinac, an almost 5 mile wide channel that separates Michigan's lower peninsula from the upper peninsula. Due to this strategic location, Mackinac Island has been used as a fort since 1780 to control the Straits. Originally built by the British, it was taken by the Americans not until 1796, 20 years after independence was declared. The British also briefly reoccupied the fort and island from 1812-1815. Of course, the location was also strategically and culturally important to Native Americans long before. I remember reading an excellently illustrated book as a kid about Mackinac Island, which according to Native American legend was formed by a giant turtle. The name Mackinac actually orginates from the Ojibwe word meaning ‘great turtle.’ Interestingly enough, the French spelled it Mackinac and the British Mackinaw. The island and bridge use the French spelling, but the city on the mainland the English. As an island, the only way to reach it is by boat, plane, or if the straits freeze over, snowmobile. There is a small year round population, but it’s largely a (very popular) summer tourist destination. It’s an incredibly unique and beautiful place! Fort Mackinac, where you can see historic reenactments. Typical ferry The Grand Hotel (view from the ferry), which boasts the longest front porch in the world, and has a formal dress code (and is very expensive). View of the Mackinac Bridge from the ferry, which connects Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. When it was built, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at 5 miles. Downtown. The only transportation on the island is horse-drawn carriage and bicycles. Fort Mackinac sign American Trench / Whitesville / Left Field / Hokas1 point

No, went with a 32 again haha. I ended up losing a bit of weight recently after a period of gaining through lifting, so I think I've hit the max size I'll ever be haha1 point

My jeans have a similar repair, but in this case (and almost always) I get darning without any patch. I also have overstitched the middle seam to reinforce but in my case the darning was done because some fabric itself was starting to fray. It's been holding quite well as a repair now with another two month of bicycling on it.1 point

I don’t think there really is such a thing as the ultimate result. Embrace the wabi sabi.1 point

I hate to say it, but it seems you’re wanting to control denim more than it can be controlled. Wash it now, you may get shrink, things might bleed a little, which is unavoidable whenever you wash, and your jacket will be ever so slightly lighter to begin the fading. And eventually, when you wash it again at some point, it will probably shrink just a little bit more. It might not, but it might. And you just have to live with it. It may stretch out again some too. Or you could wash it again a second time right now on a hot cycle to try to avoid this, but you’d lose more indigo, and you still might not avoid it completely. Denim is best thought of as a little bit of a living entity. If you like the fit now I would just get on with wearing it. That’s the best way to sort out the stiffness.1 point

I think you are in danger of overthinking things (I wouldn't worry about it bleeding through for example). If the fit is good just wear it and it'll break-in, even if it's a bit stiff at first. A soak will still leave it feeling stiff. If you need extra shrinkage for best fit beyond the one wash dimensions then try a machine wash to start with.1 point

If it's 'one-wash' a soak isn't going to shrink it any further.. a second wash might, a hot wash will.1 point

I never learned the proper way to sew buttonholes by hand but it's easy enough to loop stitch enough upholstery (heavy duty) thread around the hole to secure it for the foreseeable future.1 point

Thanks for the write up Martin.. Judith Chalmers job is safe for the foreseeable1 point

I've heard Blackship may be a good option. You can declare any value with them and they can also repackage/remove tags. I made an account but have yet to use it. I'll probably give it a little bit of time to see what actually happens - because we know this shit could totally change any minute.1 point

The (now) annual Dad and lad weekend away in the Peak District, infamous OO Soul country Quick pit stop en-route at Porter Coffee on Sharrow Vale road - £17 for 2 butties and £1 for parking - how much! Hardly a Sheffield accent to be heard, southern tones aplenty - gentrification of S-codes? Took the WoMs for a walk around Bamford Edge... totally staged pic looking out over the Hope Valley It's a strictly carnivorous weekend - we packed 4.4kg (yes I weighed it) of ribeye, T-bone, lamb... will we get through it all is the question And a sauna to finish the day off...1 point
