The nuances of majime and charai are pretty difficult to explain. 

I think the words can be used to describe both personality and behavior.

 

Majime: I'd say it's a combination of stiff, earnest, and sincere. You never flirt with women. Don't go out to clubs. You are kind of a home body who may go out to local taverns (not bars) once in a while. If you do go on a date with a woman, you wait sometime before you make a move. Lab and I are very majime. For OG djrajio, it's all about dinner to bed on the first date. That is very unmajime i.e. charai. 

 

Charai: Basically the exact opposite. You are funny, outgoing, party, good with women, and etc. You could dress conservatively but can dress majime. That's what most of my friends are.

Obviously networking is valuable, using that to meet well-placed people who can help you out, but I'm talking about cold-calling/pitching to someone who is not HR (say department head or similar) to find work. Better if you have inside info/intuition on a role they might want to fill etc, but even without that - is it possible at a higher corporate level?

 

I only ask because I got both my jobs (not including casual work/self employment through uni etc) that way, but they're both with smaller companies - haven't tried it with mid-tier company, or even the top end. Whatchu think?

One of my buddies from college got a job as a currency trader at a top level (size of balance sheet) bank by cold calling. There is really no downside to it and a lot of upside.

HR is useless 99.9% of the time.  If you have a company you are interested in, look for their talent acquisition specialist, in house recruiter, people specialist, or whatever they call it.  A lot of companies are moving away from involving HR in the hiring process other than requesting the background check and doing benefits, because most HR folks just ctrl+F keywords on resumes for roles they have no understanding of, and cannot recognize talent, fit, skills that hiring managers are looking for.  The last time I had HR help me find someone, the useless pos sent me a 6 page resume and for every job under experience, the candidate used and rearranged the same 5-6 exact sentences hoping nobody noticed.
