Workshirts

Don't knock them just because they aren't from Japan, great quality stuff. They have a gray chambray I want and a red one coming out next year that I'm looking forward to.

I concur, to me their workshirts are great and I too want the grey and red one. However - IIRC they tout their chambrey as being "the finest japanese chambrey" or something like that, right?... though I'm sure they're put together in timbuktoo.

I picked up 4 vintage (probably 80's) chambray shirts, all cotton and all made in the USA, but all sized Medium if anyone wants one or two... Looks like they're old prison shirts or work shirts. No manufacturer tags... but I couldn't just let them go to someone who wouldn't appreciate what they were...

Would love to see some pics and measurements of those...

Ah yes - my wife and I have some quilts made for our kid from some of those very same fabrics you linked to. Thanks for the link Zissou!

...I'm almost crazy enough to want the multi colored car fabric from that link in a workshirt pattern. Someone(not me) should make this happen.

Doesn't the name comes from the textile manufacturer Liberty of London?

Yeah, it does. I should have linked to their site. They are some beautiful patterns, but I can't imagine myself wearing any of them...

Maybe this abstract one:

Woah, are these bicycles? That's pretty awesome.

I used some rare deadstock fabric of their's from the 60's to line the Self Edge Mr. Lucky Caps:

Looks great, kiya. I think a lot of the fabrics would make amazing linings, but perhaps a bit loud for shirts.

I don't know - I have a few western style shirts with patterns like that. One is a Wrangler western shirt with a floral pattern similar to the layout/color in the lining of Kiya's hat - only more washed out/faded and there are exactly half as many "rows". It's not as loud as you would think. Looking at all these patterns makes me think old cowboy shirts, wallpaper in trailer homes alongside wood paneling, and tablecloths - but I always thought those things were faded from years of use. It never occurred to me until now that they were designed to look so muted originally.

BTW - that bicycle pattern would make great boxers.

Those prints must have a beautiful hand feel for $38/yard for a 53 inch cut. Quite nippy.

I picked up some light grey chambray for a shirt project. Anybody in San Francisco should check out Britex Fabrics (on Greary) near Union Square. Prices are high but quality is good and there's 4 floors of it. On the second floor they have a few bolts of amazing Japanese indigo died cloth.

That's the idea I told you, dear Zissou. Please make it happen. With the right choises of prints, it would look great!

Thanks Zisssou for the link. I just called and they are sending swatches of the blue indigo cloth and some indigo prints. I'll let you know when I receive them. $65/yd., ouch! And thanks for the heads-up raWorkshop

Yeah, that's why I went with the grey, no way I could experiment with $100 of fabric. It sounds like they get new stuff all the time too.

I know, rel... :) I asked Nathan what he can get and haven't heard back. The first site I linked sells it by the yard, but it is pricey. The latest (of a few) shipping fiasco has me thinking I should just start making my own clothes :(

Wow, Lance, that is pricey! Please do post photos. FYI, Lance, Nathan has a real problem making shirts out of someone else's fabric. Not too sure why.

I feel your pain, Zissou. I'm going to try a pair of trousers with the hemp cloth I bought a little while ago. First a trial run with cheaper cloth, then dye the hemp, then try it with the hemp. I'd like to try a shirt after the trousers, but not with #65/yd. cloth.

here's some pics of the vintage chambray work shirts I picked up. I found some inspection stickers in them and they folded just perfect, like they were new, so I think the store just unfolded brand new old stock shirts and hung them up. 3 are about the same color and one is darker.

Just got my Fullcount chambray in from BiG..gave it a hot soak and tossed it in the dryer..took some pics to share..the lighting wasnt the best so bare with me

The shirt was very stiff before soak..still a little starchy but lays much better.

Regarding those Jcrew chambreys again... I was in there yesterday and examined them again, it dawned on me that for the money (if im not mistaken) Jcrew offers the most details of most (all?) other chambrey shirts on the market. You get some really nice japanese chambrey, a vintage tab design where the top buttons are, selvage edges at the gussets and under the collar tips, AND ALSO the false placket thingy towards the bottom front of the placket .... not sure what it's called but it's kind of like the old fashioned pull over dress shirt design (if not full unbuttoned). Also IMHO they really come off as good quality too. So I personally would never pay more than that for a chambrey work shirt. Just wish they'd switch to a blue cateye button for variety. As for the darker grey version of the same shirt... they are nice too but what was weird from what I saw yesterday, after examineing three or four of them - none had the selvage edge at the side gussets, only grey chambrey cloth. Also, Jcrew carries a cheaper version of these shirts, I think they were marked $69 but the quality was obviously lower, they reminded me alot of the ones over at the Gap, which wasn't too bad when you consider it's cheaper price there.
