english is not widely used here. but the locals have been co-existing with americans for over 40 years, so they're used to us. on base, it's just like a small suburban town in the states. so, to answer your question, yeah, you can get by with english in okinawa and many people do.

hi folks.

today, after i taught my submission wrestling class, we went to see a free concert featuring homemade soul, a cat from philly who is awesome. this dude can sing! and his band is killer. so we piled in my boy steve's little car and went on base.

going through the famous “gate 2.” on this side of the gate, it's japan. on the other side, it's the u.s.

the concert was held at the kadena theater.

the first act was two kids from kadena high school (on base). they were good!

homemade soul, doing his thing:

he sang a song accompanying himself on keys. he's got great r&b chops.

sebastian the drummer from holland. he is incredible.

afterwards we decided to go to all-you-can-eat yakiniku! we live across the street from this place. it's called seiryu and you can stuff yourself silly with meat—kalbi beef, pork, duck, seafood, chicken—all for $18 USD. rice, soup, kimchee, and veggies are all-you-can-eat too. and soft drinks.

i was admiring their tats and asked if i could see them. turns out, they are japanese-style tattoo artists who own a parlor in ginowan city, called “andan.” very cool people, i hope they keep up the good work.
