Studio probably had a deal where he directed a certain # of pictures. Then they realized his movies are shit and they can't blow big budget/movie star money on him anymore so they gave him a adaptation to do on the cheap and hope shit breaks even.

How was this?

Honestly, was not my cup of tea. A lot of gunfighting but no real story or dialogue.

Depp and Bale are alright in it, I just think the script was really weak so The actors had little to pull from.

It appeared as though the only point to the movie was to make Dillinger look really cool, and make the FBI look kind of incompetent. Dillinger also broke out of jail way too easily with a fake gun that looked so incredibly fake. Anyway, I don't want to nitpick because I could probably go on longer...sorry about that gun spoiler too but there were a lot of things like that in the movie and I wanted to give one example.

It was kind of what I expected, but I was still disappointed with it.

With that said, I am sure it will be really popular

I've heard it's extremely faithful to the book, and that the trailer literally shows all of the action in the movie - they did it to get more bums on seats. The Weinstiens iirc.
