this thread is at once a relief and a bummer

my nose was running and my eyes were aching yesterday and i was worried i was catching cold

no fever to worry about but weeks of sinus pressure instead :(

from my experience, it really helps when you put a cold wet towel on your face and lie down for a bit. will cool your sinus and eyes down and will help with the aggravation. and as much as i hate medicines too, keep poppin' those pills at a proper dosage.

findmybetterhalf, that sucks man.

Yeah allergies are a damn pain in the neck indeed, I get bad hayfever in the spring/summer. Its extra bad for me too as I need a nose job for a deviated septum, so I can't breathe through me nose properly....has anyone had this? Apparently it happened from getting smacked in the nose to many times, playing rugby and I have 2 brothers.... lots scrapping when we were kids. Been on the public health system list to get it done for about 3 years, still no op.....man. Its like living in high altitude, headaches and stuff. Whine over.

Does anyone get bad allergy attacks during the night time? I'm usually fine during the day after popping some loratadine pills, but occassionally I'll feel like complete shit at night while I'm sitting inside or something. I'll start to feel real stuffy and my nose will just be running nonstop.

Ande, I'm in the exact same situation...awful hayfever and a deviated septum. This makes sleeping really difficult for me since my nose gets pretty clogged up and I have to try to breathe through my mouth, which ends up getting really dry. I have to get up every couple of hours to drink water and clear my nose now. In the last four months, I don't think I've had one good night of sleep. :(

Clarintin-D has worked well for me during the daytime so I would recommend that to anyone who's suffering from a runny nose/sneezing and sinus pressure. Astelin, on the other hand, didn't work for me at all and it was probably the worst thing I could've taken because it made me really drowsy.

Btw, I've started carrying a roll of toilet paper with me for my runny nose. Anyone else do this?

most of my friends who have pollen allergies have gotten immune to it by getting a shot every week for like a year or something. my brother had a deadly allergy to wasp and he is now 100% ok (it took 3 years of weekly shot though). you guys should seriously talk to your doctor about, it's a pain in the ass to get a shot every week, but so worth it when it's done cause you can say goodbye to your allergies

i've heard from one of my friends there few days ago that the pollen count there is above 5000 already. i don't know exactly what that means but it sounds horrible.

atlanta: the pollen count on monday was 5,499.

120 is the cutoff for "extremely high"

bumping this thread.

anyone had any more problems with their allergies?

went to a specialist here today and looks like i might be starting those shots to try and get my system immune to my chronic dust allergy. going to suck getting a needle so often, but after the year or so it could be gone forever.

has anyone here been on or is currently on this shot thing?

my allergy has kicked back in this year. seems like LA is a tough place for people with allergies. horrible air quality combined with perpetually warm weather allow so much shit to grow and float around.

i used to take allergy shots and this is what i can tell you, from what i understand. i think it depends on the severity of your allergies for how well the shots work and how soon. if your allergies are normal, you could be good within a year or two. i've met many people who had successful results.

but the allergy being gone forever is not always the case. i've known people who are okay for few years. then they have to go back for more shots for about another year. and back and forth.

in my case, i once took the shots for about a year straight. but although i could tell the symptoms got better for me, i still had a long way to go for a true success. but then, i had to move for my job, and i didn't look for a new allergist when i did. so i kind of lost track. could be my loss.

I've been plagued by allergies as far back as I can remember (during the spring/summer time)... I've tried just about everything (short of drinking Chinese beatle tea) and the nasal mister seemed to work best for me (to battle tree pollen).

But as Chicken mentioned, it is a nasal steroid and you get dependent on it. A year or two ago I tried misting saline solution up my nose at the recommendation of a friend with very similar results to Flonase/etc... I never bothered Googling for it until now...

I have two words for anyone with allergies here: Sinus Rinse.

I have allergies that act up pretty badly, and this has helped clear them quite well. I rinse my sinuses out around three or four times a day. Keep in mind that this isn't a preventive measure or a cure, but it does help clean out your sinuses, which is sometimes just as good.

^ what happens?

i'm afraid if i'll find out i'm allergic too one of these days.

landho, sinus rinse is not steroids? do you think i should try it out?

If you have not already found out whether you are allergic to penicillin at your age, 99.9% of the time you are NOT allergic.

A lot of antibiotics are derived from penicillin and if you have been on an antibiotic before, you have been on a penicillin analog.

There are antibiotics like aztreonam for the folks with penicillin allergy.

growing up, i never took antibiotics.

then, when i had my wisdom teeth pulled out, they put me on antibiotics.

and i don't know if it was the aftershock of pulling four teeth out or the antibiotics, but it was like my body went through a shock.

but i guess i'm not allergic. thank goodness, dr herp.

Sinus Rinse isn't steroids; it's just a baking-soda-and-sodium solution that you mix with lukewarm water. The packets of solution are measured out in individual doses; you fill the squeeze bottle that's included with lukewarm distilled water (I've gotten lazy, so I just use tapwater, which has still worked) and then you shake it up. You squeeze the solution into one nostril and then all kinds of crap comes out the other nostril. You blow some more of that junk out, and then you repeat until the solution in the bottle is gone. You can do it more than once consecutively, too, if you're really stopped up.

I think the sodium in the solution causes the blood vessels in your nose to expand, allowing you to breathe more easily. I'm not exactly what the rationale is, though, but I definitely breathe more easily for the next few hours after I've done a rinse.

There are no steroids involved; this isn't medication. It's just a way of cleaning out a lot of that junk that gets caught up in your sinuses. I live in the middle of the intersection of several allergy belts (molds, cedar, pollen), so my allergies act up a lot. I was always fatigued and my nose always felt stopped up. I don't want to call Sinus Rinse a miracle worker, but I've been using it about three or four times a day (usually once when I get up in the morning, once at work, once when I get home from work, and once before bed) and it's been awesome.

The main thing to keep in mind is that this will not cure your allergies; it will just alleviate your sinus pressure and help clear out the junk up in there.

The original package costs about $13 or so and comes with a bottle and 50 packets of solution. Solution refills are $13 each and come with 100 packets. It should be available at your local Walgreens or CVS.

It will feel weird the first time you try it, because you're shooting shit up your nose and having it come out the other nostril, but you'll get used to it pretty fast. I bought this for my brother, my sister, and several friends. I've been using it for more than a year now.
