City Market Barbeque in Luling, Texas. Noted as some of the best BBQ in Texas (and thus, in the country), and easily the best I've ever had.

And that's from someone who has lived in the state his whole life.

I will finally be hitting some of the other best places before I leave the Austin area (graduating in December).

They open at 7am. I got there around 10:15 am (I was actually driving through the town for another reason). I didn't have to wait in line, but by the time I left there was a line 15 or so deep, and growing.

This is the meat room. You go in to order meat, but buy everything else (sides, drinks, whatever) at a different counter. If there are saunas in heaven, they smell like this room. Note the sign saying to keep the door shut.

My order. Got a little brisket, a couple ribs, and a ring of sausage. Plus obligatory white bread, pickled jalapeno, pickle, and a thick slice of raw onion to cut through the richness of the meat. Came to about $10.50. By the end of the meal I was eating that onion like gari to cleanse my palette between bites so I could get the full effect of the meat every time.

The sausage was, surprisingly, the most amazing thing. I think it was all beef, pretty loose-packed. It was staggeringly rich and juicy and perfectly spiced. Casing still had an awesome snap, but the inside just melted.

Pork ribs and brisket were also just spectacularly good.

The ribs had a bark that literally crunched, but gave way to this amazingly moist and buttery meat. Came clean off the bone, but you didn't have to worry about the bone breaking (this sometimes happens when ribs are allowed to cook for too long). Seasoning was great but didn't overpower the meat.

The brisket was deeply smokey and very tender (except for one small section of one of the strips that was a little dry...that's pretty much unavoidable, though). Even that drier part was not chewy at all, like lesser brisket can be.

It was so good.

Feel bad for people who will never know real barbeque.

Big cook-up with a group of friends, one of whom happens to be a sous chef turned organic butcher.

Started of with this;

The moved on to duck fat roasted potatoes

61242267.jpg

Animal-fat free potatoes for the vegans

63275349.jpg

With roast pork belly (not for the vegans, obviously);

And finished it up with a little magic brownie;

After all the wine, this little nugget of emerald cacao almost finished me...

Foreign Cinema, San Francisco.

This place was lovely, eating outside was awesome.

Some bruschetta stuff with white cheese, tapenade, and some raddichio.

Tasted really good.

Organic burger with Acme bun, heirloom tomatoes, grueyere, and tarragon mayo. The burger was really good, fries tasted like they were from in n out, which isn't really a bad thing i guess.

Faded, two in the morning, and on the hunt for something situational-y appropriate.

Back at the 24 Hour Persian Coffee shop. Again with the samplers, again with the Mixed Kebab (Lamb, Chicken, and the other meat that they're allowed to eat). If anything, it felt like eating the contents of a small farm, Barn and garden included.

Morning after Turkish Coffee. Something to get my potentially fat/alcohol clogged arteries back to working condition.

4907114369_e456b31052_z.jpg

..and in some freak stroke of luck, the family had Callos (Spanish Tripe Stew) at home for lunch that same afternoon.

Dinner out, oddly enough went down the Spanish fare route again. Paella Valencia for two.

First Peruvian meal after a couple years:

Garlic shrimp w/ potatoes

My first try of Inca Kola. Not bad, rather light compared to its strong bubblegum smell. Tastes a bit like Japanese Ramune.
