football: the beautiful game

la oranje played such a dirty game, espana deserved to win. i can understand that it was probably the netherland's best strategy to play dirty football, but taking away all the beauty in the game is kind of despicable.

what the fuck are you talking about

As much as I like Spain, their flopping was def Drogba-level.

thought both teams were a little guilty of over-dramatizing. my appreciation has grown immensely since the tournament started but its one aspect of the game i find all too cringeworthy at times.

Not saying that Spain should play dirty but c'mon... that karate kick style on the chest and those late tackles from behind, pulling shirts and arms by Holland... surely if Spain didn't follow their opponent's style... they'd have gotten trampled by the dutch and lost 4-0 not because they play bad football but because the other team try to play rugby in a football match...

don't understand people who claim iniesta was offside when it's blatantly obvious that he wasn't. i can see people may be disappointed with the result, but denying reality is just fucking ridiculous.

i think more people were more frustrated with the moments leading to it (spain givin a goal kick when it was obviously a corner, some minor fouls, etc.)

it wasn't an offsides though i agree, the reply shows it pretty clearly.

I'm perplexed how folks were surprised by the Dutch tactics.

Inter over anyone?

I was more impressed how Oranje, especially Van Bommel, DIDN'T play as dirty as I thought they would.

Oh yeah... most of you don't watch football regularly...

blame the ref for the amount of cards, also the ridiculous spanish diving, it was pretty easy to spot on the broadcast, although i think he just liked blowing his whistle everytime someone went down

terrible comment.

I don't remember them always being that rough... In the last few years they definitely gotten worse... it's not as bad this time because they played Spain... if it was agianst other rough teams... it would have become The Battle of Johannesburg...

I dont think the ref did a bad job, i mean sure, that was a lot of yellows, but at the end of the day, only 1 player was sent off when the netherlands could have had 1-2 straight reds and robben could easily have been sent off for shooting after the whistle had gone, had it not been a WC final. Iniesta did dive quite a bit, but the way he plays the game tends to draw a lot of fouls, not unlike robben

The refereeing was fine. In any match that ended as close as this one did, their will always be questions asked of the ref. I think that aside from that goal kick awarded to Spain that should've been a corner, everything was kosher. The ref was forced to give early bookings because of the Dutch's tactics...which was to break up Spanish fluidity and not give them a chance to build up an attacking rhythm by putting a lot of pressure on them in the midfield. I don't think they expected Webb to draw cards until late in the first half...they were wrong. Although the Dutch tactics worked in the first half, they paid dearly for it in bookings....and when they went on the attack in the second half, they didn't have a cushion and had to defend carefully. DeJong's foul on Alonso looked bad, but it's the final...I would've given a yellow too.

The referee was fairly good for the situation of the match - it was a match full of hard, deliberate challenges, dives, and whining. There was no partiality on his behalf. It is unfair to say that iniesta was offside - he clearly was not. It was a good goal, solid, calm finish at a crucial time. I thought that heitinga's 2nd yellow was a little bit light considering how challenges and situations involving yellow carded had been approached before that.

All in all, Spain deserved to win the match and the tournament. They played the game with a correct mindset and ensured that they got the results. This is Spain's "golden generation" - it would have been a shame if they didn't take a world cup home as it is for the cruyff's teams of the 70s and the more recent holland teams in the 90s and early 2000s with many great players like bergkemp, kluivert, davids, stam, van der sar, etc. I was extremely surprised that holland got to the final this cup - it really shows what a bit of luck and clear, organized tactics can do for you. On paper and on the pitch, this team is far from the best holland teams. But, I guess that that goes hand in hand with the fact that there just aren't many truly great players who thrive on the big stage right now. This world cup will usher in to a phase in world football where this a far greater emphasis placed on tactics and synergy over skill and class.

those are both extremely selfish comments. is it wrong for the world to revel in a spectacle as beautiful as the world cup? even if some fans do not watch the game regularly, is it wrong for people to share enthusiasm for an event that demands the world to watch?

i'm a much bigger hockey fan, but i was proud when i saw my fellow countrymen cheer on our countries team in unison, even if they never cared for hockey before.

... but i forgot we're on superfuture. we're supposed to be elitist and shit on everyone's opinion.

On the offside comment I will say this and shut up about it : Iniesta came back from an offside position in the first half of the attack. Flag should have gone up by then.

Maybe the linesman didn't think he was an active part in the attack but after recieving the ball, he was, therefor an off side should have been given.

I always liked Mr. Webb as a referee but he and his linesman cocked it up there. I just finished watching a documentary on the EC 2008. same story, the same linesman missing some crucial offsides and flagging down other non off sides

Yep! Me and my brother saw that! In all honesty I was just glad the game was over in favour of Spain and no penalty shootouts. They deserved to win the game. Match with Holland often ended up in a very hot situation and some big teams with huge ego and hot head usually lose the plot because of the way they play "rugby" (Portugal last world cup and Brazil this time) but Spain handled it pretty well considering the dutch should have collected 2 red cards early in the game.

This world cup sucked, a lot.

Forlan was the only light.

Seriously, spain? People playing like gay priders, looking like 4 years / old little boys and doin 3092890890 passes without speed and percussion...

I hate them.

As much as i hated these people watching football every 4 years and speaking like specialists whereas they don t know anything...

Lets go back to the real thing at the end of August.

And all of you must know that Marseille is going to be a very strong team, even for the Champions league... Luis Suarez is talking with us...

Our team will probably look like :

Coach : Didier Deschamps

__________Mandanda___________

Azpilicueta_Diawara_Mbia__Heinze

___________A. Diarra_____________

_____Lucho_________Cheyrou______

Valbuena______X?__________Niang

Mandanda is in the european top 10 goal keeper.

Azpilicueta, our right back was in the short list of Barcelone, Madrid, Arsenal and Inter but choosed Marseille to play for Didier Deschamps. He was in the 30 spanish players for this world cup and everybody in spain wanted him to be in the 23.

Specialists see him as the future best right back and expect to see this defense : azpilicueta ramos piqué capdevilla

Diawara : no need to explain how strong, powerful and agressif he is

Mbia : Mbia + Diawara = NOBODY WILL PASS

Heinze : The "Grinta", the experience, the warrior I FUCKING LOVE HIM

Alou Diarra : The best 6 here in France... Mourinho wanted him to come in Milan last year, but he choosed to stay with Laurent Blanc in Bordeaux. Hes in the european top 10 defensive midfielder and will make us forget Lorik Cana!

Lucho : The magician... He s so underrated... Same class and level as Sneijder or Fabregas if he has a good striker ahead, to enjoy all his perfect assists... Last year even with Brandao playing as our 9, he was fantastic

Cheyrou : You probably don t know him but he s considerated as the best midfilder with Lucho in our Championship. THE player everybody wanted to play the World Cup but you know Domenech and his strange choices... Will probably be in the 11 of Laurent Blanc.

Valbuena : Good player, was in the 23 french players of this world cup... Same profile as Ribery

Niang : our captain, amazing player, amazing striker, Liverpool wanted him instead Jovanovic but he wanna end his career in marseille... Our Raul!

X : Our 9 will be a world class player. We ll bring 15 / 20 M on the table for him... Rumors : Suarez, Huntelaar, Quagliarella (the Napoli wants Brandao...) and if we can t manage to have one of them, it ll be Andre Pierre Gignac, a very good french striker.

On our bench : Taiwo (the left back that Mourinho, Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal want but Deschamps will try to convince him to fight against Heinze to get his place back in the 11), A. Ayew (Ghana, son of Abedi Pelé, revelation of the World cup), Brandao (if he stays), Hilton, Kaboré (who will often be in our 11 : Mourinho wants him, he s young, expect him to be the next Essien), Abriel, E.Cissé (good bench players)

MARSEILLE 2010 / 2011 IS GONNA BE STRONG

A word about the French Team... We need to rebuild everything, to oust the players who bring shame on us with this stupid strike (Evra Ribery Gallas Anelka Abidal), to launch our young and talented players (Gameiro Cabaye Menez Rami Ciani Koscielny Tremoulinas) and to finally incorporate players that Domenech didnt like for their personnalities but who deserved to play (Mexes Cheyrou Mavuba Nasri Benzema!)

Laurent Blanc is the BEST option, one of the best coachs in the world and we ll surely be back at the top in 2014!

____________________Lloris______________________

Konko/Chalmé_Mexes_Squillaci/Koscielny_Clichy/Tremoulinas

___________________A.Diarra (capt.)__________________

__________Menez/Cabaye____Cheyrou/Nasri________________

___________________Gourcuff________________________

_______________Gameiro__Benzema_________________

Goal Keeper Lloris : best goal keeper in the world... Seriously. We also have Frey and Mandanda, Ruffier, Carasso... We probably have the best goal keepers of the world!

Right back : Konko from Seville? Reveillere from Lyon? Sagna for Arsenal? Chalmé from Bordeaux? Nothing brilliant but we have players...

Left back : Clichy is the best option... But we also have Tremoulinas (seen as the future best left back of the world by Lizarazu) or Mathieu who s amazing in Valence

Central back : Mexes wasnt in the team because Domenech is a cunt.

We also have Koscielny, who s just signed in Arsenal for 10M, Squillaci, brilliant with Seville, Ciani and Planus from Bordeaux... Blanc who was probably the best Defender of the last century will easily find the good duo.

Defensive midfielder : We ll play with only one 6 and he ll probably be Alou Diarra. Blanc made him come in Bordeaux and made him his captain... Deschamps, who know this post is making him move to Marseille... QUALITY! We also have Flamini, Lass or Mavuba, excellent with Lille.

Midfielder : It will depend on if we play against a top team or a weak one.

Against a strong team, we ll probably put Cabaye and Cheyrou, 2 fantastic players : technical skills, perfect vision of the game and good at the recuperation.

Against a weak one, we ll put more offensive players : Menez from the Roma (Totti said he s one of the most talented player he has ever seen) and Nasri.

Number 10 : Nasri can play here but Gourcuff, Laurent Blanc's fav, will have his chance to show how classy he is... In a team without Evra, Ribery or Gallas who made him live a hell, because they were jealous of his advantageous apparence and because they suspected him to be gay, he ll surely be at the top!

Strikers : Gameiro is the most wanted young player here... Milan Ac, Valence, Arsenal... A world class player in a system with 2 strikers!

He could make a good duet with Benzema, if he plays more with the Real! Benzema has the potential to be one of the best striker in the world, we all hope Mourinho will help him to accomplish his fate!

We also have our indestructible warrior Djibril Cissé, even if his technical skills are funny, André Pierre Gignac (if he goes to Marseille, he has the potential to become a world class player) etc.

BANNED PLAYERS :

RIbery, for his selfish attitude ("i wanna play as a left wing and i dont care about the team") and how stupid he was toward Gourcuff

Evra : the man who decided to go on strike... Brilliant with Manchester, Pathetic in blue

Anelka : no need to explain why

Gallas : He spoiled the ambience

A last anecdote : Evra Ribery Gallas and Anelka had a ritual : calling Gourcuff "the new french idol" (as a reference to the famous tv singing contest) and to slap him in the head everytime he was interviewed.

In South Africa, after the game against Mexico, Evra slapped him harder than usual, in a mean way. Gourcuff answered and Ribery, Gallas and Anelka tumbled to begin a 4 against 1 fight... Gourcuff's 3 team mates in Bordeaux, Alou Diarra (6'3), who s a physical monster, Planus and Carasso arrived and Diarra told Evra that if he has a problem with Gourcuff, he will now have to speak to him before...
