Great thread, don't really know what to add. Raise the Red Lantern was a trip, really a chilling film. Yimou also did an occupation-era flick called Red Sorghum. Good film about an underexposed circumstance.

'moon', directed by duncan jones (son of david bowie) is the best film i've ever seen in the cinema.

clint mansell also provides the soundtrack, a man who's musicianship gripped me ever since the first time i watched requiem for a dream. ever since then i've looked out for films that he provides the score for deliberately and have not been disappointed.

i just watched taxi driver too, since its on hulu, and i agree with you. i dont really know what the hype is about.

i finally watched star trek and watched it twice. really good, excited about the sequel. imagine if jj abrams redid star wars haha

hes pretty clearly suffereing from some sort of post traumatic stress and his positivity toward palantine was because of his infatuation with a women who campaigned for him. its quite obvious he knows nothing about the mans politics from their meeting in his cab.

the whole film chronicles bickle's emotional state as it teeters on the edge of insanity. he takes the women he obssesses over to porno flick for christ sakes. theres absolutely no rationale to his actions until he finds someone really disgusting to take his rage out on - keitels character. and even that kind of seems like a consolation prize for not being able to pull off the palantine assassination. so hes hardly a hero or anthing, just a crazy motherfucker who wants to enact a little violence cause he feels boxed in.

The power of taxi driver comes from it's unflinching commentary on the state of the American psyche in the aftermath of losing the Vietnam war, which wouldn't neccessarily translate if you were just idly watching it for entertainment.
