I was in this exact scenario 2 years ago. I had prey installed on my macbook, got a bunch of pictures, personal info, GPS location, etc but the police didn't make a move. Eventually the thief sold the computer on craigslist, I emailed the buyer, and she turned it into the police.

The police later told me that I was hasty in interfering because they had subpoenaed the thief's IP address and knew of the buyer, so going vigilante may or may not be your best course of action. Either way good luck.

Update time. I got around 120 friends on the fake account now and of that 80 are mutual with the girl. I didn't friend request her and I don't think I need to, yet. I'm friends with her sister, brother, aunt, and her mother accepted me today. I also dug further into her facebook last night and I think I found the bf/fiance. Him on her wall:

 

 

There were like 20 messages in a similar vein and I saved all of them. He's not using his government name, just some abbreviations and an obviously made up last name, presumably because dude has regular run ins with the law also.

 

 

 

 

This is him referring to himself in 3rd person. Note the dates. The above is from last month. The funny thing about this is the dude actually friend requested me the day I created the fake account. I'm a somewhat attractive but not out of your league thick black female. Too bad there's nothing interesting or incriminating on his profile. No pictures of him. Just 4 pictures of the same green car.

I've tried looking up this name on the department of corrections website but yielded no results, but I think it's another good clue for the police.

 

The crooks haven't been online since last Friday, but reports are coming right as I'm typing up this post.

Most of the time the police arent going to do their job.  We use computrace at work, we would send the police the theft reports and nothing would happen, we even have a former cop on our physical security team who made the reports.  Thankfully computrace has an escalation process if the police wont do anything and eventually they will send their own team of armed former cops to recover the laptops.  Had 10 stolen all at once.  Was able to recover 6, the other 4 made it to the Domincan republic, those we got cash compensation for.  Just looked at prey pro, wtf how is it more expensive than computrace and doesnt have a recovery guarantee.

On the facebook front, the bf/fiance is now trying to holler at me and I'm trying to get him to send a pic. I gave him a google voice # but they can't receive pic messages unfortunately. Any ideas?

It's now looking like the dude on google voice is telling the truth and he's actually locked up. We got to talking about the girl and he said they broke up a year ago.
