Material & Texture Studies in Elements of Nature

This series of five conceptual weavings sought to replicate colors and textures found in nature. From crushing natural plant matter for dyes to spinning freshly sheared wool, raw materials inspire my exploration of the different fibers and how they interact with each other. The weavings continue to evolve through off-loom processes, eventually to inspire, if not exist in, a collection of garments. The images of the weavings draped on a dress form are solely meant to give the viewer a rough idea of how the fabric might appear when worn.

a poem i wrote inspired by William Eggleston's photo of a red ceiling -

The Red Room

The three of them lie on the bed, soundless,

As the attentions of two are turned upwards

To the lightbulb, on some nights indifferent,

But on this one fixed with murderous intent.

She says with her head tilted away,

Facing the window dotted by raindrops,

That the water is making it very hard

To look outside as far off as she could,

Which is exactly the only kind of seeing

She can manage in the present state of being.

He shifts his legs to and fro a few times,

Ending with an abrupt two taps of his shoes,

And suddenly their friend wonders aloud about

The sweet misfortune of being in the same boat.
