Shoes that look better with age...

So I've been reading through this thread a lot and I'm still not 100% positive what size I need for SD's.

I want a pair of SD"s really bad, but I'm not sure my exact size. I wear a 7 in Clarks, and a 7 1/2 in my Red Wings and Vans. What should I get in the SD"s? Do they run big or small or true to size?

Looking for a few answers to help me determine my real SD size.

Thanks guys.

dont screw around. fill out one of their measuring things and see what size they say you need. it doesn't take long and is really easy.

a couple of questions

- anyone know if the Red Wing round toe models (such as 8134, etc) fit the same as the Red Wing GT's?

- im looking for a pair of Engineer boots that are affordable and don't come with a steel toe. I want the toe part to flatten with wear. Any suggestions?

- what about sizing with Dayton Boots; take the same size as Red Wing/White's? I'm really starting to like their Black Beauty model; in particular the 'heavy Duty' subtype; here's my favorite makeup

What would be your price range for something like this?

Both these are non steel toe.

Chippewa 97863

Frye Rand (sometimes listed as Brando)

The Chippewas can be had for 150-170 and the Frye's anywhere from 150-250.

I would definitely look in to a pair of Frye Rand's/Brando's. They have some celastic, but mine (tobacco) are flattening out pretty nice. Over time, they will definitely flatten out giving it a vintage profile...IMO. I've been toying around with the idea of purchasing the black version.

Cheers!

I actually stepped on the toes of my brandos to flatten them out and soften up the celastic. They look pretty good now.

These now available at Epaulet.

These were an insta-cop for me. The previous Epaulet x Thorogood 685 boots are insanely comfortable out of the box and the construction is really solid. An absolute bargain at the price, grab a pair before they sell out!

would this be an option with the vibergs with the toebox that's turned upward?

I really like the look of those boots, but would definitely look even better with flattened toes I think

thanks for the suggestions guys; under 250$ is affordable imo

those frye's look pretty good but not feeling the double strap at the top

i've always wondered why some of the modified/repaired Red Wing 2268 models with steel toes look so flattened on our famous Japanese shoe repair guy's website. Its almost as if the steel part was removed?! I cant imagine stepping on the toes will cause it to flatten significantly?

Can't you just order those vibergs with a lower profile toe-box?

I think you would have to pick another last then and the toes wouldn't be turned up like on this one... (not sure though)

that's what I was trying to find out from emailing Brett, but seems he's really busy, so it's kinda hard communicating...

Nah, stepping on a steel toe won't do shit. It might be possible to remove it. I was speaking of stepping on the toes of my frye brandos, which have a pretty soft celastic toe box compared to other boots like the vibergs.

You're 100% right. I don't remember where I first saw these pics(Edit: these are from a blog called "Life Time Gear"), but they are not mine. Shows just how much stepping on Red Wing steel toes will do. And I think the toes look flattened on the Red Wings from Takeshi's blog because of the angles the pics are taken from.

Just got my WL hill boots. (not new but I thought I would share anyhow).

Specs are Italian leather (redish brown), natural double leather sole.

These came lined too so the leather is super thick!

This is just after a coat of white's boot oil.

Nice boots, denimjunky!

You need some of this polish - I thought all polishes were much of a muchness until now...

Done with Tricker's branded 'cognac' polish (made by Saphir?). Just seeps into the leather and leaves a 'liquid' finish on the boots...These were done yesterday, worn all day today and just buffed once for the pics...
