You can tell when it's a ringflash. His shot was a three light portrait, main beauty dish (right camera), catch light (left subject), and background light.

Ringflashes can be useful if you're in the business of using it all the time, but otherwise, it's an expensive one trick pony.

this is a cheaper alternative for a ring flash especially if you already have a decent flash. haven't tried it personally but its an option

a good ring light can be used to awesome effects. the keyword with that is CAN; it usually isn't. a simple straight on ring-lit portrait is just boring after you've seen it once

i was thinking something like Cartier-Bresson's work.

From what I remember about Bresson's work, I think he used a 35mm, not absolute on that though.

Assuming you're shooting 35mm film or full frame, go with the 50mm. 28mm, in my opinion would be too landscape-y.
