as a medical student, heres what i understand about this (and im trying to put it best in non-medical/scientific terminology), im not a virologist but hopefully i can shed some light on the situation:

1.) the flu virus is currently a 'hybrid' of various strains of flu virus, it contains genetic material from the normal 'winter flu' viruses, bird flu and some others. It basically is an inevitable mutation that would've happened anyway, however the intensive pig-farming processes meaning animals (and humans) are in close close proximity to each other probably accelerated the jump between the species gap. Currently it is transmissable through nasal secretions and on surfaces (WASH YOUR HANDS)

2.) your normal flu shot (that you got) will confer some protection against the flu (but not much) as the virus contains genetic material from the normal winter flu bugs.

3.) as of today 28/04/09 the WHO has classified the virus as being transmissable from person to person (ie you may get it from an animal). if you (god forbid) do get it, it was probably from another disease-bag human.

4.) it is too late to contain the outbreak as it has already spread across continents. However, that being said, it may not become a pandemic due to the health care systems (relatively) rapid response.

5.) it seems to affect young people in their prime due to what we could call an 'exaggerated' response from your (healthy) immune system, which is why it is alarming and deadly.

6.) referring to (5.), the cases that have been reported outside mexico have been somewhat less deadly as the cases in mexico. They don't know why this is.

7.) conventional antiviral medication has been shown to be effective against this virus. However, the WHO people have not ruled out that the virus could mutate further, either becoming a.) less or b.) more virulent.

8.) there is no real need for alarm at the moment. but keep yourselves posted.

hope this ends the pages of bullshit speculation

There are no restrictions, but they scan all incoming passengers at the airport for increased body temp with infrared cameras and you can be put in detention at a designated hospital if they identify any flu symptoms.

All these 'security measures' are quite pointless btw - the key characteristic of this virus is that a carrier can infect others for up to 7 days before any symptoms appear and is thus undetectable.

I just had a burrito this morning, all that pork trash. But I think the Dim Sum I had for lunch would kill me.

"Some nations, particularly in Asia, are tightening their borders and immigration controls, and American travelers, along with Mexicans, are finding themselves objects of suspicion. Health officers at three Japanese airports were being deployed Tuesday to check passengers before they got off flights from Mexico, Canada and the United States. Travelers suspected of having the flu would be quarantined and examined further at medical facilities, news agencies reported, citing the Japanese health minister."

"Japan will suspend visa-free entry for Mexican nationals and advise its own citizens to defer trips to the Latin American nation, the center of a global swine-flu outbreak.

The passenger screening will affect people arriving from the U.S. and Canada, expanding from checks taken on flights from Mexico, Masuzoe said. The government today advised its citizens to avoid traveling to Mexico and other affected countries, but isn’t placing formal restrictions, he said. Geneva-based WHO isn’t recommending travel restrictions."
