  • 1 month later...

Decided to start a thread concerning any members who enjoy running, jogging etc. I havent really considered myself a true runner untill maybe 7 months ago when i started putting in semi significant miles a week. But, I'm completely addicted now. It's improved my overall health and energy, lost weight etc... I've done 3 5Ks so far and have a 10K coming up this summer in Atlanta the "Peachtree Road Race". As long as I stay healthy I can see this being a life long thing. I Get in about 34 - 36 Miles a week. 2 miles a day on the treadmill (dunno if u guys count that) before I hit the weights and 3 to 4 miles on the roads or the park 3 or 4 times a week. As the 10K gets closer Im gonna start following a rigid running program and start upping my miles.

Use this thread to log your miles, ask for tips, shoot the shit with other runners etc...

Dammit. I looked for a running thread too. This can be closed if need be...But

As far as shin splints I read somewhere that stride has a allot to do with it. It happens when people overstride. Try to make your strides smaller. Also, shoes have allot to do with it as well...try something more flexible.

I used to love running in Nike Frees but they wear out so quick, or at least mine did. Plus for long distances I didn't feel like they gave me much arch support. Hopefully with the newer models coming out I can try them again. And for running at night I used to but, because of work I have to run early morning now (5:30-6:30am) it sucks and I miss running at night. :(

I think the Free's are supposed to simulate barefoot running, when I used them, the heel and arch felt overbuilt. I'll stick to my Asics Nimbus' :)

Nike Free VS Vibram 5 fingers??

I ran marathons, had constant knee problems. Switched to the vibrams and now I run exclusively in VFFs, gone up to 10 miles. It's definitely a preference thing. I would say try them, but work your way slowly into them 1mi at a time or you'll get the worst top of foot pain ever.

How do you like the Nike frees? I was thinking those or the lunas.

I'd say do it. Always good to pit yourself against other runners on race day ... plus you'll obviously get a super awesome free t-shirt!!

PS how fast have you been doing 5ks in the past? I'm still trying to break the 20 minute mark :(

Some other plans have come up and I'm going to the beach instead this weekend. Otherwise I think I would've done it...just because. And yeah...Im a sucker for those free tees..seriously wearing one right now. I do want to enter into a half marathon and eventually a marathon down the road but im gonna start off with a 10K then a half marathon. My 5K time is just over 20 mins as well. My last one which was about 3 weeks ago was 23:42. Not amazing but not bad either. Told myself Im not running to get amazing times or win them but I cant help pushing myself further each time.

what's a good program for a beginner? i just got done with college tennis and need something to keep in shape during grad school. i just started last month and have been running daily or every other day, about 2-3 miles, depending on how tired i am after lifting weights.

also i think i might of gotten started too fast or am wearing 4+ year old shoes or have crap form because one spot of my shin hurts already :(

It might be an idea to investigate what type of runner you are.

If you go to a good specialist running store they will video record your stride (like in the vid; lthough it only cover over pronation) and recommend what shoes are suitable for you. I run in Brooks Trance at the moment; was with the Asics GT2140 before ... both good shoes; I genuinely think they helped me with the avoidance of pain in the legs.

There is a theory that it is a crock of shit though; but worth your attention especially if your considering starting a serious running regime.

From my own experience; coupling road running with treadmill work at the gym on shittier days is ideal for keeping your fitness up. Finding ome to run with also helps. Competitiveness and the like.

Also take rest days when you need them. No shame in that.

Running my 5ks in 20:40 at best at the moment.

^ That's a very good time. Hope to be getting at least close to that soon.

As far as starting a new running program I think the best advice i got on that is "do what works for you". At first that kinda response pisses me off cause its so vauge, but its very true. You have to listen to your body, you are NOT supposed to be in pain. After a run you should be out of breath and sweaty and mabye even sore but not in excrutiating pain...if so..something is wrong, either overtraining, the wrong shoes etc.

I started out with a shitload of pain as well, mostly in my ankles. Since im a dumb ass i refused to stop running and it only got worse. When it healed I decided to stop running so fast on my daily runs and so far. I invested in some decent running shoes (Nike Torch 4....hoping to get some Lunalites soon). And, I started hitting the treadmill for speed runs and the long runs were done outside. Its the same routine I keep now and I have no pain. So, basically its a trial and error thing...just dont take yourself ouyt of the game before you learn to reallly enjoy it.

just copped some mizuno wave nirvana 5 shoes. went to my local running store and they said i over protonate on my left leg, hence the shin splints so they recommended a stabilizing shoe. the shoes feel awesome compared to my old ass asics. we'll see how they hold up when i go for a jog tomorrow... took the day off and went drinking :P

I hate being the person to have the last 4 posts in here but....what shoes is everyone running in? Im currently wearing Nike Torch 4s, which I got when I was on a budget, but have served me well through several gym sessions, morning runs and races. However, Im thinking of an upgrade soon...prehaps the lunarlites Nike.

ughhh fuck my achilles is really hurting me right now. Not even sure what happened. Woke up this morning with it kind of painful but nothing I couldnt shake off. I did my usualy 3 mile son the treadmil in the gym with no real problems but as I was lifting weights I noticed it was hurting to move from once bench to another. I usually do about 5 or 6 miles in the evening on Thursdays but I'm gonna rest today so i can do my 10 miler on Saturday, which i look forward to all week. I fucking hate these ticky tack injuries. Hope it heals quickly...

Btw...anyone read this?

Finished it a few days ago. Not amazingly written but great descriptions of what it feels like to be immersed in running.

Wearing my olive drab green 10k race shirt from Iraq ('08) under my cammies today. Haven't participated in a race longer than a 10k - my best time (of the three 10k's in Iraq) was around 42'ish minutes. Haven't run as much as I did in Iraq. I logged in approximately 200+ miles in 13 months and for a non-runner like me, that's a milestone.

I've slacked off some while lifting weights more, but I'd like to get back into running. I ran a Physical Fitness Test last week with a horrible time of 21 minutes for my three-mile run.

Is there a trick to breathing while running? I have absolutely no breathing control - i just take the big breaths when I need to. I'd like to run an 18-minute three-mile.

Any info would be appreciated!!

Cheers!!!
