and the not ridiculously priced and probably most beautiful car out there right now, the brera:

oh god, i love this car. dino gt! it seems like i'm the only guy who loves this.

and i've been in cars a while and just hanging out with others who do the same.

XB GT

capri GT

alpha GT

2002

there would be others, and I would probably take black over any of the colours here.

Tyro with some serious design synergy, the Giulettas used to be as cheap as 2002's and then 'tuner' folks like EvilCrayon came along and made $3000 cars into $25,000 cars. Can't even find a decent vintage Alfa in America anymore and they used to be given away for free.

246GT, yes please, in white with lens covers and slatted back.

Brera, beautiful car, one of my favorite current cars, I want a white one with the BLESS cover.

i think a matte black brera would be fucking bad-ass. am i the only guy who likes matte paint on cars? i have only seen it in videos and photos so i'm not sure how it will turn out in real life (i think it's fucking retarded to do any modifications on cars, but i would probably shell out the money for a matte black paint job in the right car).

i may be saying an absolutely retarded thing and crossing the good taste line , but i'm not very "car educated".

If they sold the Brera here I'd be selling all jawnz

I've only seen flat black on either a) civic hatches with rusty mufflers or B) 50's ford pickups/70s camaros. I've yet to see it on a decent car.

i like think of both. miatas are great to run laps in, but i'd never be caught dead in one.

i know the cars on ur list. and agree with most. but carrera gt > any porsche, cayman s is whack, e39 m5 no thanks. i personally don't like the mclaren f1:eek: the styling's bland.

This illustrates the difference between the philosophy I subscribe to and the one I semi-bashed. Why wouldn't you be "caught dead in a Miata?" Because someone else might think you are gay, or couldn't afford something better? Some here care about those things; I don't.

The Miata is one of the most involving, entertaining, and easy-to-live-with sports cars that has ever been made. People like to beast over the cars that preceded/inspired it, ie. old Brit roadsters, but the Miata is the perfection of that concept. People may say it's boring, but I just say it'll run circles around those cars on any track and go for 300,000 miles and that's more important to me.

Wrong, unless you have unlimited amounts of money and live in the middle of nowhere with no intention of seeing other human beings, a car is also an inevitable status symbol and you buy them partly for cachet, which is also to enjoy.

I guess where we differ is that I don't think "status" comes from what you drive, but from what you do with your life. I know you are pretty well-off, and I'm not gonna try and dismiss who you are, but the heaviest hitters I know don't care about what they drive because they've got their mind on more serious stuff.

If you say you don't,you're lying. You can build supercar-slaying cars for under $50K and we can probably all agree the best engineering to value cars are made in Japan, but what kind of tasteful person would want to be seen in them?

The kind of person who cares much more about how the car performs than how they look driving it.

Favorite cars are subjective and change daily, especially if you like cars. I liked the E39 M5 when it was new, I don't really like it that much now.

I liked it new and I like it just as much now. Same with 'outdated' cars like the EM1 Civic Si, or the NSX or the original M Coupe. The car itself does not change; only the way you view it because something newer has come along.

Your list is pure engineering, I can appreciate that, but frankly, it's boring as hell and predictable for a keyboard motorist. The 599 will not prove itself to be a memorable Ferrari, its styling will date easily as well. The GT-R is not exciting (I included it on my list because what else does Japan make but boring cars? Japanese people don't want them)

The 599 may not have the old-world appeal of other Ferraris, but it's probably the most reliable and the easiest to thrash on a daily basis. The damned thing can run on 70 octane if you happen to find yourself stranded in a third-world country!

This brings me to my next point - I'm not a keyboard motorist. I have done a lot of trackdays and have beaten on a lot of cars at the same four tracks (VIR, Summit Point 1 and 2, BeaveRun). I learned very early on that it's more about the driver than the car. So from that perspective, the best cars are the ones that allow you to push your own limits.

Hence my example of the Cayman...dynamically, the MR layout is superior to the RR. The Cayman S is very close in racetrack terms to non-turbo 911s, despite being handicapped with much less power and inferior brakes. A factory Cayman with, let's say, even the base 911 Turbo motor would flat-out murder any factory 911. And that is more important to me than how many were made, and what it has in common with the front-engine, four-cylinder 944 (absolutely nothing except the badge on the trunk).

Yes. It's not hypebeast-approved but it is one of the most rewarding cars you will ever drive or own. They are incredibly reliable and even the base models are great fun. The one I really like is the 170-hp Mazdaspeed version from a few years back.

i just don't get the hate though. i would probably buy it over any sportscar in it's pricepoint. she could have bought some cl mercedes but she prefered the mazda.

is it supposed to be a cheap car in the states? i mean, cars are expensive as fuck here in portugal (for comparison, a new c class base model costs around 40k+ euros) but the mazda still costs around 45k euros here, not exactly cheap in my book.

edit:

lol my mistake, it's more like 28k for base model and the 2.0 sport is 35k (i think it's the one my sister has). i understand what you guys are saying now.

In the States, you can get them in the low $20s and a fully-loaded model with a power hardtop will set you back like $29k.

It's really not a lot of money for what really is a ton of performance. Plus they are as reliable as something like a Honda Civic and will last for just as long.

It's not hypebeast-approved,

shut up!

ok du at the track had a fast miata, roll bar too. and was hearing "what's the roll bar for? to hang your purse?" ALL DAY.

i'm never that. anyway, different strokes for different folks.

A rollbar is to protect your head in case you roll over. Dudes making fun of rollbars have no idea what they are talking about and should not be taken seriously.

All of the justifications for not buying a Miata (or similarly affordable performance vehicle) revolve around the opinions of some hypothetical group of admirers/detractors/competitors. Is this the best you guys can do?

The scariest ride I ever took was in a Spec Miata...true story. I'll never forget that shit, I was pissing myself while my instructor was passing 911 GT2s in the advanced run group.

the brera is incredibly underrated. don't see many even in italy. I unfortunately see a lot more 3-series than breras.

egpt, I think the brera looks really sexay in blue too.

No love for the 8C????

i actually like all alfa romeos, but brera is on a league of it's own to me and the 8c is gorgeous too. The GT and all the others look good but nothing too special, but still look better than any mercedes or bmw of the same segment. if i was buying a car right now for 20k euros i would definetly buy a mito (i think that's the name) because unlike americans i like small cars that i can park anywhere, i really don't have the need for a bigger car and because it looks great, a lot better than any car with the same concept (mini, fiat 500 etc).

i remember seeing one brera in portugal. i have seen more vanquishes, continental gt's and hummers (!!!!!!! lol) than breras by faaaaar, which is kinda ridiculous.

edit:

actually, i don't like the GT at all, because everytime one is heading my way on the street i mistake it for a brera and when i see it's back i cringe.

Just came across this thread and and made me reminisce. Used to be really into cars, but don't really have the time anymore. Anyways, favorite cars.

1983_Audi_Ur_Quattro_Turbo_Coupe_Fr.jpg

^The reason why I used to have a e30 m3. Secretly deep down inside I wanted a quattro coupe(we get harsh winters up here:D). Now I drive a 300whp mk4 r32, but still would ideally want a dependable audi couple.

Something about those lines.:)

RSR, you and EvilCrayon are complete internet car beasts and you guys contradict yourselves in every other post, sometimes the same one. How is it you make your top 10 list of cars based on practical real-worldness and strictly for the engineering, not for billionaires, and then you include the F40 and McLaren F1? Fuck out of here. Servicing those cars would cost more than the rest of your list combined.

Beyond that, your list reeks of working-class dreams of magically getting everything for nothing (yeah, your $50K Civic can do an 11 second quarter, but guess what? It's a Civic) and beating the upper classes, but even you yourself will realize someday that the satisfaction derived from owning a car has little to do with what you talk about.

Flat black paint jobs, I see them all the time, they are rampant in Korea on riced up 320i's and SLKs (SLK200's, not like SLK55's or anything like that) and I've seen an M6 vert in it too. It looks cheap and shitty on cars that don't have the kind of busy dynamic lines to support that kind of thing, and only really looks good under studio lighting anyway. I was pretty sure that flat black paint was already over, considering it's made its way here.

A Brera would look terrible in flat black, it's slab-sided without any character creases, and the front fascia is already a sea of grilling and black to begin with. The Brera (as are most modern cars) is suited to gloss white.
