just noticed this question.

boogers do smell. however, your nose becomes desensitized to booger odor with prolonged exposure, the same as it does with any odor.

this is why really nasty odors seem to get less nasty the longer you smell it, e.g. why you don't mind your own superBO after days of not showering because you're surfing sufu nonstop.

so the smell of clean air is not the smell of boogers superimposed on clean air, it is just the smell of clean air (because you can't smell the boogers anymore). but after a while of smelling the clean air, you won't be able to smell that anymore either.
