anyways some north of the border talents. wolfparade, swan lake, sunset rubdown, destroyer, frog eyes, etc. and yeah someone mentioned cohen before.

besides. who the fuck cares. good music is good music.

didnt mention sunset rubdown becuase i figured it would be redundant after mentioning wolf parade (same reason i didnt mention Destroyer or AC Newman or neko case, cos New Pornographers covers all of them).. and have you listened to the first sunset rubdown stuff ("snakes got a leg", i think its call ?? I could hardly listen to it, i thought it was pretty bad, but i like Shut up i am Dreaming alot.

Oh, another Canadian band i like is an all girl band called Pony Up! and one of the girls from them is also in Sunset Rubdown.

i listened to joy division, gang of four, pil, etc. the whole postpunk thing back then and i see how put in their era it was very important music, but i myself can't really listen to them.....i've tried to get into it but i just don't like it. then i listen to more mainstream '' crap'' as you call it, like libertines, razorlight (1st album only), rakes, strokes etc. and i love that. just an observation but i think a lot of this is purely based on personal preference (ie you like melodic catchy songs as opposed to experimental music) and not on whether or not it's good/bad music.

"NME is a publication that has besmirched its name for far too long by pushing crap like Bloc Party and Editors where it used to push the Fall."

Icarus, what you fucking said. Can we place the utmost emphasis on The Fall? The Fall do not make bad records. When they are occasionally off their mark, it is still their mark. Their lesser records are better than the "brilliant" shite by most of their contemporaries and poncey up and comers.

Forget about "Brit Pop" and just begin digging deep into The Fall's extensive catalog. It's reckless, raw, anarchic music. It's good for you.

And the Contstantines!

Everyone forgets the best new band of the last few years came out of Canada! One more badass record and "Indie Canon" here they come.

And i must agree fully, Canada, when it comes to "Indepedent Label Rock 'N' Roll", has been the best thing all of music has had to offer recently.

I agree.

The Constantines (and W. Shatner) ALMOST allow me to excuse the following egregious Canadian errors in music:

- Celine Dion

- Michael Buble

- Bryan Adams

- Alanis

- Barenaked Ladies

- Avril

- Sum 41

- Nickleback

alot of people are giving you non-britrock recommendations.

for straight up rock start buying shit from the hawkwind's catalog.

for that new britrock shit try the good books.

i thought the departure was good minus that one song...

dior homme endorsed cd singles can be purchased at bonjour records in tokyo.

pretty expensive, but great packaging. i don't know if they do mail order (for these specific titles) because i have never seen them post the releases on their site.

The Libertines were around before The Strokes debuted their album but nobody would sign them till after The Strokes made garage rock trendy.

and yes perhaps indie is a misnomer, it means something different today than what it once did

with regards to today's bands looking back for inspiration again i'll say 'what does it matter' as long as the music is good, it's a good thing.

this is the FUNNIEST thing i've ever read...this guy is regurgitating everything he's read in the NME over the past 2 years. wow...and he's talking about "indie". last year he was listening to the killers because the music papers told him they were "cool". and the strokes made "garage" rock trendy? you are a fucking genius!!! wow.

Jeep, I'm going to dive into this MADDDCHESSTERRERERERER shit now that you've mentioned it twice. Mostly because of my parents I grew up a hip-hop kiddie and have only recently started looking past that...it's been good so far.

actually it's from the libertines: bound together which tracks the 2/3 years before the libertines made it big

and i don't listen to american music, it's shit.

If we're talking about Britpop et al. 24 Hour Party People is a must see.

yes. but its more on the ibiza scale of things

fair enough. lib's are much better than anything america put out at the time, and their one of my favorite bands. too bad dirty pretty things turned out to be sorta a bust.

Eh no it's not. It has nothing to do with Ibiza. It's about Tony Wilson (played by Steven Coogan) who sets up factory records to sign Joy Division... who then goes on to sign Happy Mondays and James. It has everything to do with Britpop and "Madchester" in the 1970s.

oh, well ive never seen it, but i knew it had to do with happy mondays and factory records, so i immediately assumed ibiza was involved (now that you say its about the 70's side of the manchester scene, i know its not involved cause ibiza wasn't till mid-late 80-'s and 90's). isn't one of the colkin brothers in it?

im definitely downloading it soon though.

and yeah JT, you might be a dick, but babyshambles are where its at. shotter's is brilliant, but i do miss the messy guitar work of pat walden.

for DUM, and anyone else who's looking into getting into some great british music..

heavy hitters in descending order (these are mostly notable 80's and 90's groups):

  • Blur
  • Oasis
  • Suede
  • Pulp
  • Elastica
  • Menswear
  • Robbie Williams
  • Happy Mondays
  • Stone Roses (sorta the genesis of a lot of these groups)
  • Radiohead (eschewed the britpop scene, but c'mon, Pablo Honey is a perfect example of soppy britrock)
  • Inspiral Carpets
  • Ocean Colour Scene
  • Paul Weller (Style Council especially)
  • Ride
  • Ash
  • 808 State
  • Primal Scream

i'm leaving out a bunch, i know, but those are the real big names to come out of the british rock scene between the 80's and 90's. feel free to add to the list.
