The Rakes

Good Shoes

Blondelle

Razorlight

The Paddingtons

Littl'Ans

The Futureheads

...and if you want to try something different; The Horrors

I toally agree with Carl on those picks.

The best album I ever listened to was probably "The Stone Roses" by The Stone Roses. Get it and listen to it.

My picks would be...

The Buzzcocks

The Smiths

Wire

Leatherface

The Chameleons

Radiohead

Catherine Wheel

The Chills

Tindersticks

Gang of Four

good call on catherine wheel, completely underrated band

I'd like to thank every poster in this topic for reminding me just how poor the British indie/alternative scene is currently. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to hug my Cure and Joy Division CDs whilst burning any copies of the NME that may remain in my possession.

If you're talking about crap British Rock today, I think some bands today are actually pretty decent, like Snow Patrol, Clinic, Solex. There are a few others but none can come to mind right now.

Nice one poly, some of my all time favorite bands, must re-order MBV loveless. Got the La's cd and an Oasis dvd for xmas...my nice friends.

Most legendary and prolific band hailing from the mother land

THE CHARLATANS

oasis

my bloody valentine

joy division

new order

the la's

felt

any factory records stuff and 90-95 era brit pop/rock is untouchable in my mind. it will never be as good again.

well it was a waste of good money to buy the NME in the first place

and you couldn't be more wrong

British music is the best, especially the Indie scene.

Where the fuck were you in 1994? I haven't bought the NME since about 2001, but I'm sure there's an old copy kicking around somewhere.

I'm not contesting that the British music scene kicks ass, but the 'indie' scene at the present moment is doing nothing but pissing on the gravestones of the late 70s/early 80s New York and London scenes. At the moment the other side of the Atlantic is slaying the Brit scene, though with DFA1979 and Q & Not U broken up I'm left clinging to Minus The Bear, The Shins, The Decemberists and Interpol for any faith in that scene.

With the exception of Radiohead, who aren't exactly 'indie' anyhow, I'm at a loss to think of one surviving Brit band who can touch the early 90s or mid 80s indie/alt scenes.

The Wedding Present.

Although they were a big part of what made it so great back then to.

Also possibly...British Sea Power, Clearlake and the Doves.

Um, fuck you Asterix. This is exactly why we broke up......I still love you.

Bloc Party is goddamn amazing. I hate how people hate them because they got "overhyped." There is no denying that they are extremely talented artists. Also, I didn't think it could be done, but their newest album is as good if not better than "Silent Alarm"..........The Kooks are ok as well. If you are asking for Brit-pop/rock in general, there is no better band than Stone Roses. do it.
