Any tips for longer rides?  I'm going to try to do 140 miles over two days with two of my good friends and two of us are trying it fixed.  We've camping one night so I'm probably just getting a rear rack and strapping a hiking pack on the back.

Also, I know I've asked this before but what got everyone into cycling and riding more seriously? I bought a bike (Kona Paddywagon) just to commute and get in better shape and I've just been gradually adding miles to my rides.  I'm about to do my first half-century this weekend and am considering getting a cross or road bike in the near future.  I might try to join my school's cycling club as well.

Ride more and more often. Even two hours a day you can plug in some good endurance.

70 miles a day isn't too bad but if the terrain is hilly, I hope you don't really plan on going too fast with the fixie bros, unless they're particularly physiologically pre-gifted.

Collegate cycling is great if you wanna race, but if you're looking to just kick around and have fun cycling, then check out local shops for group rides. If you really want to ride hard and race for cheap, it rules though. You should probably learn how to do a fast group-ride first though.

I'd only get a cross bike if you really want to ride cyclocross. A good 5-8 year old carbon road bike really ride so much better than cross bikes, and the positioning feels so much better.

I'm Going to be re-building a Peugeot UO-9 frame this summer and I wanna throw some bulls on her, where did you cop yours man? I love those angles!

Which ones? I have both Nitto RB021s (The shallower drop) and Deda AKROS 31, which are the deepest drop (~75mm) you can buy (out of production AFAIK though).

Rode my first half-century yesterday so hopefully I can keep building up mileage.  Luckily the 140 mile ride is on a trail that is pretty  much flat the entire way.

I'm going to try to get started doing some group rides with my local shop and then see if I like it from there.

What's the general consensus on how much to spend for a good road bike? I'd rather spend more on something that I will like for a while but still want to keep the price reasonable.  Any recommendations on older carbon builds?  All of the trails here are gravel which is part of the reason I considered going cross instead of road

What's your max budget?

A good road bike that will last a long time can be had from the range of 700-1200, or a little more depending on how exotic you want to go. I'd look for things on a minimum for 10 speed Ultegra 6600/SRAM Rival (don't bother looking for Campy stuff), actual brand name wheels (eg mavic Ksyrium vs. just mavic wheels), decent stems/posts/bars (3T/Deda/Ritchey). Look into bikes with compacts vs triples, as triples are going the way of the dodo.

A road bike with 25 or 28c width tires wouldn't have a problem with gravel at all. Cantis as found on cross bikes suck all sorts of badness compared to a good road caliper.

Not too sure on max budget. Probably around a grand.

I've been meeting a couple other people who ride in town as well.  To be honest, I'm a bit intimidated with cycling but now that I've done a few longer fixed rides I feel a bit more confident.

Hopefully one of the local shops sells used.

Never posted my new ones either. I got a very good deal on a 2011 Canyon last summer, and have since then got new pedals (ultegra 6700c), new stem (latest ritchey, but it's 1 1/4 so not so easy to find), the saddle (selle slr), seatpost (hylix chinese carbon), got the newest version of the SRAM Force shifters and plan on getting a lighter handlebar and am in the process of building carbon wheels (new pictures when done)

I also restored this Panasonic frame last winter and gave it a Ultegra 6600 group upgrade (9 speed, dura ace frame shifter) and Fulcrum racing wheels. I have changed the saddle in the meantime for a selle slr as well.

Just got my new Tarmac S-Works frame. Going to build it with Dura-Ace 9000, both group and wheels. Fizik Cyrano 00 handlebar, and Fizik R1 stem. Looking forward to spring!!

I have had a Tarmac for many a year and has served me well .

Only issue I had with it was that the nuts that hold the water cage on pulled through the carbon fibre , issue was only resolved under warranty after I used my loud voice , has not happened again .

While it was being repaired I had a rabeaux on loan from specialised , now that was a nice ride .

Yeah, Tarmac is a nice bike. I've had a SL4 for the last years and I've been nothing but happy! Usually Specialized are really quick and easy to deal with when it comes to warranties!
