the nike flywires are pretty nice. not waterproof, but pretty water resistant. nsw was also making another shell that was basically the same as that, but a different fabric that is waterproof and also has zip pits. i love mine, but got it as a gift. i believe its around $400, which is pretty steep for something like that. flywire was around $200 iirc.

if you're mainly looking for a riding/performance jacket, also check out patagonia. k-tel picked up a jacket from them and is really happy with it... longer tail and arms, etc. if you want to go for some super nice road riding jawnz, check out rapha as well, but they are total $$$$.

Something more functional and simple, doesn't have to be expensive, just to get me warm commuting to Brooklyn. I might end up sewing some patches over if the logos are too in your face. So I don't mind the cheaper alternatives. Gonna get me some balaklava as well

for riding in, i would just look for a quality shell. once you get rolling in much of anything else you will be sweating your balls off. i rode the bridge last saturday when it was like 2 out and got to the bar pouring sweat.

def 2nd patagonia for the price/performance sweet spot... that said i have a north face summit goretex softshell which is the absolute shit.

also make sure your underlayers will wick moisture or you'll be dripping wet... if you can't (or won't) swing high tech, natural animal fibers are your friend

Hardshells do not breath well below freezing. They will usually make you sweaty even if you are very cold.

Softshells or multiple thermal layers are the only way to go.

if its a track frame with fork ends, no. if you purchase a conversion, yes.

I think the Van Dessel has a derailler hanger. So in that case, yes.

Or you could use an internal geared hub on whatever frame you wish.

i've had it for a couple weeks now. new saddle on the way (selle italia turbo black) and gonna chuck the cloth bar wrap for some white cinelli cork wrap. overall pretty satisfied.
