I'm rather fond of Anna Karenina myself, I would even go as far as say that it surpasses Love and War in sheer power, probably due to the transgressive nature of the story.

I recently read Crusades through Arab eyes by Amin Maalouf, which is quite an engrossing read; I would say the same about Samarkand, another Maalouf novel.

i've never read didion, though....

i like her a lot. i had read parts of slouching in high school and when the times magazine reprinted part of magical thinking i went out and bought it the day it came out and had read the other two a couple weeks after that. she's just a really good observer, has a nice voice, just really sharp.

King Rat by China Mieville - I read this one years ago when I was in my mid teens, but it was memorable enough that the title pops in my head whenever someone says the word book.

The amazing thing about this book written over 100 years ago is how it sounds in some ways like it could have been written last week. We seem to never let history teach us anything.

i will agree with you partially on the fight club comment. the ending of the film is much better than the book, but i still think that the book is incredible.

Shantaram by David Gregory Roberts is an AWESOME read. They're making a movie based on it and starring Johnny Depp, so read it before the movie comes out!

Looking for a new book to take away with me on holiday. Something fairly lengthy and in the same vain as Irvine Welsh's work. Self destruction, drug use, criminal acts etc etc

I've always wanted to read requiem for a dream. How does it compare to the film?

unfortunately I dunno! Seeing as I watched the film ( and a damn good film ) I didnt really have the urge to read the book, Last Exit to Brooklyn is good, as is "the demon" and "the room"....

You may enjoy Bukowski novels, "post office", "women"...

Thanks Viv... much appriciated. Is Last Exit To Brooklyn lengthy?? I have a few flights and overnight rail trips and couldnt be bothered getting more then one book but perhaps I think I will have to.
