i was very unimpressed with the choices for AFI's Top 100 Films this year. The Godfather should not have been two. top 10 yes, but not 2.

I just googled AFI and... I have to sign up to see their new list?? The previous one they had up was ridiculous anyway. I don't mind them listing American films only, because that's the whole premise of that list, but having Coens, Spielberg, etc while no Cassavetes is unforgivable.

I consider The Godfather an ok film. To me, it's not even Coppola's best.

casablanca is #3 this year, when it was #2 10 years ago.. pssh

i dunno, its hard to crown a certain movie "the perfect movie" title. i hardly think godfather is there, bores me to death when i watch it, though cinematically its beautiful. i just can't get into it much, and thats not saying its a bad movie. just not my thing.

EDIT: i'm very glad Bladerunner is on there though. probably one of my all time favorite movies.

agreed, Blade Runner is up in my top 3. I dunno, I think Godfather just has the best all-around atmosphere of any 'realistic' movie. Blade Runner and Alien have the best sci-fi atmosphere, but Godfather just sucks me into that world. I'm on edge through the entire film, every time I watch it. Amazing acting, editing, I love the characters and story. I don't get the hate!

My favorite movie ever though is Schizopolis. Probably not the BEST movie, but it's so fucking hilarious and bizarro. It's a really budget Soderbergh that he made early in his career, about a low-level Scientologist hired to write L Ron Hubbard's big speech. The director/writer plays 3 different characters (or maybe 4, still not sure) and his ex-wife in real life plays 2 different characters. Pretty weird shit, but fuckin hilarious.

I've seen the mother and the whore a long time ago before I got interested in films, and I was genuinely fascinated, but I don't remember any details. I really need to watch it again, but I just can't find it anywhere. I only saw one Pialat, and it's Sous le soleil de Satan and I hated it, and that was last year in a film fest. Care to comment on that film? Is it representative to his oeuvre?
