Red Cloud & Co. jeans

so i feel redcloudy today... i wore both of my purchases. the workshirt and the 436.

I like the shirt alot. it was a bit stiff at first. but it softened up after like half day of wear. the sleeve is a bit long and unmanageable, so i gave it a fold, so it looks slightly appropriate.

For the jeans, the back area was a bit slouchy maybe because i wasnt wearing it on my waist. too use to jeans being on my lower waist/hips.

Ok, thoughts on the denim. The denim, though, 13.75 oz, was really pliable as mentioned many times. but to me it aint so breathable if you ask me. (comparing this to my rn1 and rjb.)

It also gave me a 'nudie' feel, it feels alot like my slim jims, but the denim is much more nicer, dye is solid as well.

here we go... apologies, was taken in a poorly-lit room, and it was in the evening.

for r400, should i go for true size or down size 1? im afraid if im true size is too loose, thx anyway, sorry bad english :)

Just got my r400s from ABFit a few days ago. My personal opinion: size down one. If you read gregornz' posts I think you will also see that the waists are larger than what's written on the websites. Here are the post soak pics:

Thanks to ranon for offering to proxy these but I ended up going through ABFits because it wasn't that much more expensive and it was in the US so i wouldn't have as much of a hassle should I need to return them.

My initial assessment of the jeans -- texture and feel is indeed impressive. Time will tell how they fade. I like everything about the fit except for the loose waist. I got a size 30 but it was WAY bigger than that and even after I soaked it was still not snug at my waist. After a few wears I suspect it will stretch back out to its original waist length. Not complaining though because I like the fit of the thighs and legs and I can always wear a belt.

i read somewhere that this company sources their cotton from Xinjiang? hand-picked too, is this true? i went to Xinjiang a few times the past couple years for work projects (see Flathead 3001 world tour) in the countryside rural areas. Xinjiang produces near 30% or more (thats like a couple million tons) of China's yearly cotton production. with that in mind, i saw something very interesting when i was in their countryside: several large cotton fields where workers were hand-picking the cotton. i wondered, for a province that produces this much cotton, there are actually cotton farms being hand picked?? there's so much culture in those areas, i wondered if it was a tradition thing. it was a beautiful sight, i wonder if Red Cloud gets their cotton from the same source haha. if they do, i feel like i need a pair of their jeans. after all, the organization i work for is all about helping the communities in areas such as those i saw.

yes, a large bulk of their cotton is actually handpicked from Xinjiang and i haven't really seen anything made from other cotton. their claim is that running the cotton through beaters, it damages the cotton yarns and Xinjiang is mainly a cotton producing province. most of the people there earn a living through picking cotton and this has been happening for a few generations to say the least. many years back, there was an over abundance of cotton, so much so that the governement purchased it and stockpiled the cottton to maintain the prices of cotton so they didn't decrease too drastically. having said that, in recent months the prices has been shooting up because of unfavourable crop yields and most of them from the younger generation choose to leave and work in cities because of higher wages. cotton picking is a back-breaking job that most do not want to continue anymore. there are a lot of stories behind the cotton running from Xinjiang province and it would be great to hear more!

Man power is that cheap there. Even in mass manufacturing assembly lines, it is mostly manually operated equipments.

One thing that I'm not sure that people outside China realise is that these jeans are actually very expensive. 750 yuan is easily five times more than you would pay for normal made in china jeans.

I think it's sign of his quality actually. Because everything is so cheap here - the cotton farmers prob get $10 a day to pick the cotton. These jeans are totally made here (except I think for the thread and buttons from japan), so everything is in chinese prices plus he seems to do all the tailoring and design aspects himself. So they really are very expensive jeans, by Chinese standards.

Branded clothes are generally the same price that they would be in the west... clearly brands such as levi's are making as much if not more profit from their sales in China.

Chinese levi's, that is fake ones, can be bought for 100 yuan for the poor quality copies and 200 or so for the more detailed copies.

Today I received a pakage from a very nice forum member: FOXY

And here you see what was inside it

The R423XX

Pre-soak fit pics

presoakR423XX.jpg

More room than usually in the waist

P1030619.jpg

First impressions:

Cut is more modern than vintage (very slim legs)

Overall quality is great (only some minor issues but nothing worth talking about)

Denim is very soft and pliable (IMO the pocket bags fabric is the sturdiest fabric on the jeans)

Now in for a hot soak with agitaion

and t he post soak fit. I forgot to take full post-soak measurements (doh!) but waist was at 34" and thigh at 12" (what scared me the most, Denime with 12,5" is too tight)

postsoakR423XX.jpg

still damp, color adjusted for you so you can see more. but it doesn't feel uncomfortable at all. must be the lighter denim which I like.

@B_F - You have got big thighs! And what an arse! ;)

Looks good man - comfortable?

Super combs and whiskers showing their potential. For my two cents I am not digging those big arse cuffs - will you wear 'em like that?

I know what you mean about the 'flaws' - I have a couple of instances like that too... I kinda like it - makes them feel hand made.

Good work! :)

received my pair of R424XX second anniversary edition today. no pics of them yet though since im at work but here are some initial impressions:

i havent had anybody order the R424XX yet, so i took the plunge on them. was looking for something lightweight so the 13.7oz denim was perfect for what i needed. very nice and light but not TOO light. perfect for the weather in singapore. construction as usual was perfect and like advertised, the cut is based on a 1947 cut. picked up a size 30 which was the smallest they had. will say that the sizing runs a bit bigger than usual and i am a true waist 31 but there was still breathing room. will advice to size down 1 or 2 on these as they are bigger in the waist. obviously havent shrunk them down yet but i will probably do that this week or so to see how much they shrink. one very nice feature that wasn't included in the site that was evident, was the presence of black oxidised rivets on the coinpocket. havent seen those before on any jeans. usually only for the button flys but never for the coin pocket rivets. will get some pics in daylight to show how they look.

overall pretty happy with them for the price i paid and am now thinking of the S400 but those are out of stock in my size, so i'll wait to see how that turns out.

like what b_F said earlier, the price on this is fantastic for the quality. couldnt have asked for a better pair in proportion to the pricepoint.

as promised, here are some pictures of the R424XX.

contrast stitching. the main thread is orange and they used lemon yellow thread for the hems as well as some parts of the fly

R1003834.jpg

beefy chainstitch

R1003835.jpg

fly hardware

R1003838.jpg

contrast stitching again

here are the black oxidised rivets i mentioned earlier on. strange they didn't list this detail up on their site as i thought it was a nice touch to this model.
