the 30d's body is also made out of metal whereas the rebel is plastic. if you are fussy about the build and prefer a slighty bigger camera body the 30d would be the option to choose. personally i rather get the rebel and use the few extra hundred and buy a nice lens. i also like the size of the rebel alot. perfect for my lil hands.

I have big-ass hands and the 400D (xti) works perfect in terms of size, I guess some are just used to a chunkier body maybe?

the difference between those two is not that big, the xti has a couple of more mp's making the biggest image size slightly bigger, very little difference though. same sensors and image processors.. 30D also has the 1.6x cropping, so I think the biggest difference would be the enhanced ISO up to 3200 vs. the 1600 on the xti. I havent tested that so couldn't say how different it is, judging from sample images the 3200 is pretty noisy though. the camera body size is slightly bigger on the 30D, 1.7lbs vs. 1.2lbs.

edit: kind of forgot my conclusion :o

as swooc said below, I'd also get the 400D and use the rest on a lens, the body at this level makes much less of a difference than lenses.

What made me go with the 30D in the end over the 400 was the general feel of the camera. Probably the number one thing was the additional analog controls. The second wheel and the 8-way controller really make it much nicer to handle.

But yeah, if you're short on cash and a few extra seconds to get the right settings don't matter to you, the 400D is a great camera. But at 850 for the 30D vs 650 for the 400D, I'd rather spend the extra 200 and get a body that I'm perfectly satisfied with and can keep for years.

Where in HK do you get the lenses from, ebay?

I'm weary of stuff from HK on eBay because HK is known for making really high quality fakes. My dad bought a Movado watch from HK for $20 that the jewelers in the States had a hard time telling was a knock off.

Other things to consider: accessories for the 30D are more expensive. The cable release costs $130 instead of $20 (albeit a lot more fancy). The battery grip is $190 instead of $140. Etc.

All the lenses I put on the XTi were fine until I put my 24-105 L lens on. It completely makes the XTi body useless without a battery grip because of how heavy that lens is.

hmm havent heard of fake pro level camera lenses though..? anyway the couple of electronics stores selling stuff on UK ebay are pretty reputable, I'd never buy anything if I wasn't sure. bought two lenses now and very satisfied with both.

the 24-105 weighs roughly the same as my 16-35 L, its definately heavy weighing as much as the body itself, but I got used to it pretty quickly even though I dont use a battery pack, so doesn't bother me at all. except if you try shooting on an uneven surface with a lightweight tripod ;)

great photos mike lowery!

i must say, that overall, the camera is only as good as the glass you're shooting. your photos are a great example. the DOF you get w/ the 35mm f/1.4 is magical!! haha.

although, i do agree ProfMonnitoff, the extra analog controls on any camera make it easier to navigate (and just make you feel cooler ;) ) haha.

I really like your shot, theamapros.

What airport / train station was that taken in?

thanks notesee!

i shot that photo at the san francisco international airport.
