I'll more than likely be in Nerima.

A lot of my friends will be in school still until sometime in the 20's so I'll be exploring Harajyuku, Shibuya, etc. etc. until then and then I'll be with them.

I haven't gotten the tickets yet, because I'm buying through a Northwest Airlines employee, so he's already got them, we just have to buy them from him, and we basically only have to pay the tax, and throw him a little extra on the side, so they'll be like $300.

NOT BAD.

when we were dating she said she'd never want to bone in a Love Hotel because they're too seedy haha

i just ran across this. either your girl is a child/immature or just fronting.

there is nothing "seedy" about going to love hotels. it's totally common practice. i really don't understand why she would have never been to one. i am sure she's been at least once, and that isn't even a bad thing...

thomas or other gaijin not living in japan, do you select a specific look/wardrobe before you go to jp? if so, how do you do it and why?
i was wearing ksubi knit tights the other day with birkenstocks in honolulu. i almost got beat up.l

Matsusan,

I currently live in JP and I guess that since ppl here are (in a general sense) more concerned with aesthetics, and the fact that fashion is something that ppl take a least some interest in (more so than the states anyway), it basically allows one to have more freedom of choice in what they wear. For me personally, I wear shit here that I would probably catch shit for in the states. Also, I lived in HI for 3 years, and ppl there are, for the most part on some previous-level anti-steez shit, so walking around without bootcut jeans, flip-flops, and an Abercrombie shirt might be hazardous to you health. Another thing is the fact that back in the states I used to be conscious of whether or not my fits might seem a little bit fem/gay, but in JPN its totally not an issue, if you u look good, no one will call you a fag or make fun of how tight your jeans are. Also, as you said gaijin is gaijin is gaijin, gotta stand out somehow? When I go to shops with my girl the staff has asked her if I’m in the fashion industry, I dress ok, but I think its just cause they’re used to foreign ppl not dressing well, who knows?

've fucking LIVED in a love motel, and it was fun, might i add.

Where else are you gonna bone?

Chinese restaurants... I've been to Chen Kenichi's place in the Tokyu Cerulean in Shibuya, and that Chinese place in the Westin in Ebisu. They're both ok. Would need a reservation though.

Italian, there are tons of places, but I really liked this place in Sangenjaya, really cozy and the food is well done, good wine list as well. Reasonably cheap as well, could probably get a full meal and wine for $100-150? Get the grilled veggies as a starter, they're all beautiful, with several kinds of asparagus.

Any tips for getting part time jobs in japan?

I'm an ugrad so basically just looking for very basic level ESL jobs. Biggest thing would be a job that offers room and board...I don't want to make much, just enough to cover daily transportation, etc. Not looking to make a ton of cash, this'll be my first trip so I just want to visit all the cultural places and get a taste....I can always stop by later to buy shit.

I heard there are quite a few places/sites that are looking for ESL jobs but I can barely speak so.....

If you've never been here before, and don't speak, planning on living here your first time is a huge mistake in my mind.

Some people will get by with blatant 'ignorance is bliss' and never have any desire to learn the language and live in their little foreigner circle having fun, and if you are this type you might be ok.

If you don't want this to be quite like that you could possibly realize early on that it's not at all what you expected but still be tied in to a contract.

Maybe try to find an option that will give you a few months here with an option move to a more long term position if you like. I have no specific recommendations unfortunately.

totally agree. I phrased it wrong. I'm not looking for a part time job, i'm looking for a summer job. I'm going to be staying in japan 2 months at the very max, most likely a month or a month and a half.

Have you thought about an internship w/ a foreign firm that has an office in Japan? That way, you can experience Japan without the language barrier and the long-term commitment.

y'know what I was wondering recently, how common is it for college-aged girls to end up in those fashion magazines.

i mean, there are SO MANY girls in Tokyo, those magazines probably don't have to pay big-name models to model for them, do they?

probably just go to a college campus and ask if anyone wants to be in a magazine.

Just a thought..

Raj,

How easy would you say it is to do something like this? Did you (I seem to remember reading this, but...) intern and then parlay said internship into your current gig?

No, I didn't. I sort-of lucked out. But many of my co-workers have and most full-hires in my line of work were originally interns that were offered full time positions after their internship.

Its not so much a lack of girls that fit the look they want, but rather, so many girls have favorite models who they follow very closely. So using said big name models comes with a built in readership.

Of course "street snap" type stuff is almost always normal people. The shoots typically occur in one of a few places, and many people essentially camp them out in hopes of getting featured. If you look through the snap stuff you're almost guaranteed to see the gap in harajuku. Walking past during the summer there is an insane number of people who literally just hang out there all day every day. I noticed the same guy with green dreads 4 days in a row on my way home from school and when i went back through the area to shop/meet up with friends or something.

Other than harajuku i think places like Koenji and Kichijoji are scouted a lot.

actually the majority of the people in the street snaps are store staff, scenesters and friends of the photographers.. they meet up with people at the stores they work in etc. all the other people, as you said, are picked up around the normal 'trendy districts' when the photographers go on a wonder..

When the shop staff are photographed it typically says shop staff next to it. I kind of meant in the more general random people off the street type thing. To which I could easily imagine photographers friends being shown.

Scenesters is obvious though. Who the hell else would spend that much time and energy trying to get shown in a street snap section?
