thanks for the help guys, so im pretty much set on buying a canon 30d, just waiting for a good deal to pop up on ebay... what lense should i buy to start off with? i guess what i mean is, what is a standrd lense to start thats not over $200?

i would not recommend getting those packages off ebay. they mostly just load up with a bunch of shit you wouldnt ever use (or cant use because the quality is such crap) to make it seem like youre getting a good deal. imo just check amazon or b&h with one of the kit lenses to get you started. unless you already know what you'll be shooting.

After a brief tease, Canon just got official with its EOS 5D Mark II. The full-frame shooter updates the original 5D introduced back in 2005 with a 24 x 36mm 21.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, DIGIC 4 processor with 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion, and the ability to capture Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 video -- take that Nikon D90 and your paltry 720p. We're talking expanded 50-25,600 ISO range,15-point autofocus with 9 selectable AF points, 3-inch Live View LCD offering 4x the pixels of the original 5D, and a 3.9fps burst for unlimited JPEGs or up to 14 RAW images when using a UDMA CF card.

With regard to video leaked predicted by RED CEO last week, the EOS 5D Mark II captures Full HD video at 30fps as well as VGA / 30fps for the first time on any Canon SLR. Of course, it works with any of Canon's 60 EF lenses (and whatever Carl Zeiss cooks up) for ultra-wide-angle, fish-eye, macro, and super-telephoto videography. Video can be recorded at up to 4GB per clip which is equivalent to about 12 minutes of Full HD video or 24 minutes in VGA. Video clips are recorded in .MOV format using MPEG-4 video compression and linear PCM audio. You can even record with external stereo mics attached to an input terminal.

At the end of November, Canon will sell the body-only for $2,699 or bundled with Canon's 24-105mm f/4L IS USM zoom lens for $3,499. Welcome back to the show Canon, we were starting to worry.

I'm probably nowhere near enough experienced with DSLRs/Cameras in general to post any sort of reasonable review of the D90, dpreview has probably the most indepth/detail possible (http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond90/), but if you want to see pictures, I'll point you to my flickr (http://flickr.com/photos/joelzimmer/).

I haven't played around with video enough to give any real insight into it, but if you have any questions, let me know and I'll try to answer

Given that the D90 has 720P video I wouldn't think it to be too hard, that being said, I have no idea how it will ACTUALLY progress

The hard part is having enough processing power. 1080p has almost double the data rate of 720p! Twice as much data to sample, convert to MPEG, record on the memory card, etc.

720p to 1080p is a huge step but I guarantee Nikon will be able to pull it off pretty fast to compete.

Gizmodo has a good article on DSLR video if anyone hasn't seen it yet.

Oh obviously - I'm just saying they at least have the fountains laid for that sort of technology - the actual execution will be interesting - that's for sure. There's also the possibility of RED coming out with an DSLR that does video in the future - it's an awesome time for video technology - thats for sure.

So here's the kicker. A completely backwards thought…but I may finish my current work and take one of two plunges…

Standard upgrade from 5d to 5dmkII…

or get a Leica…not sure if I want the M8 or what…but I've been considering it heavily the past month or so.
