That was actually inspiring in some way, glad to see someone who got better. I've been thinking about if i should get medication but for anxiety, i heard they just prescribe depression pills

This is true. But, it really helps. If you're serious, though, be sure to do your homework and go over all the side affects and inevitable withdrawal symptoms. (Won't be so bad if you're patient and undertake the appropriate weaning procedures.)

Also, be sure you're fully willing to cut out leisure substances from your life; they're pretty adamant about adhering to this one rule.

Yea I recently cut it out because i read cannabis can worsen the side effects, im still trying to learn more about it but i think ill go through with it. Is there any medication that works better than others, ive read up but it seems to very from person to person. Ive seen that allot get help with klonopin. Although im Still trying to see the differences from Benzodiazepines, SSRIs, TCAs, MAOIs, BuSpar and Beta Blockers before i go see the doc

WTF? Are you self-medicating? Please STOP right now and see your primary care provider.

Been struggling with sleep for the past few months, can't tell if I'm so agitated recently because of my once temporary living situation (living with a friend and his girlfriend for the past half a year) or the fact that I rarely sleep. Only thing keeping me afloat at this point is my girlfriend but I worry that I'm putting too much strain on her even though she's one of the more understanding people I've ever shared my anxiety problems with. Searching for apartments to get out of this place, but considering a doctors visit in the mean time. Anyone got tips for sleep before you hit the point of taking medication? Tried melatonin, regular exercise doesn't help either.

I'd recommend you look up some meditation techniques and breathing exercises. Really helped me with getting to sleep at night... but there are always a few nights it just doesn't work. My sleeping pattern is constantly fucked though cos I have no self control.

This guy. this guy knows what's up. My depression/anxiety is really soothed by really calm yoga and meditation. It doesn't always work, of course, because that's what depression/anxiety does: effs you up in lots of different ways. But since depression is often linked with sleeping problems (i've had them literally my whole life, as have many of my friends), it's good to kind of try to knock them both down with meditation.

Though don't rely on this in a way you would medication. Think of this mindful practice as purely supplemental.

I taught yoga for a while a few years back. If I maybe got a guide together with meditation/simple yoga outlines would anyone be interested?

hahah no im not. I was just looking up anxiety medication and all that shit popped up, I just wanted to understand it more and see which worked better for people. And yea i saw that allot of people say dont go for benzos but then some say there good, I also heard there like the first medication or standard doctors prescribe for anxiety

Please do it :)

I just want to add that you should practice meditation every day, even u feel really good. We do so many things habitually, meditation just shows you what you are doing.

is being an asshole/hating everyone a sign of depression or am i just an asshole? (serious question)

what you describe is a bit vague, being easily irritable/short tempered/abusive emotionally or physically is definately part of the symptom pool

then again we aren't doctors and this thread isn't here to help with a diagnosis. if you really want to know you should talk to a professional

Myself, I've found  that I hibernate during the winter. Each winter I cut off ties with most of my friends, going out, doing things… as the winter blues set in. I'm not depressed at all like I use to be, but I do understand how people feel especially during the winter months. It's tough, but from my experience with anxiety, and other symptoms of depression, is that breathing techniques help a lot to be able to relax, stress free, get through the shitty day, life sucks die monotony. Some breathing techniques/yoga release natural opiods in your body /natural heroin, being able to relax even the most uptight people I know. I'am able to sleep, and not worry about a shitty thought I had earlier, or how life and most of the people in it just suck. To me having a history with drugs, and being clean now 2 years, being able to know how to release my bodies natural opiods  is much needed, and I find that living off all drugs even ones prescribed by the drug dealers with a license/doctors, that yoga/ breathing techniques help tremendously. I would encourage all to just look up on youtube google, relaxation therapy/breathing techniques/ how to release natural opiods etc etc. Now at first you might come across some corny ass shit (videos, soundbites), but be patient, and chances are you'll find what suits you, and helps. If anyone is interested I can try and find a few youtube videos, that help with sleeping, lucid dreaming, releasing natural opiods/relaxation.

basically admitted to a close friend tonight i don't know what is happiness or what it is to have fun.

so i know that depression is something to do with chemical imbalance in your system (or something like that...)

I am curious as to whether as a "healthy person" you can develop depression versus being born with it i.e. family history.

In high school i'd get super depressed because of a bad breakup, getting rejected etc. but is that really depression or just part of growing up?

today i woke up early then went back to bed till 4PM. Decide that the things I wanted to do can be postponed. On the other hand, my friend told me tonight I seem content, unmotivated...are these symptoms? I was very close to asking friend whether I am depressed but  kept it to myself in the end.

I need to get that book, redX...

Opioids mostly act on pain receptors and have little to do with sleep and relaxation. They supposedly alleviate stress e.g. endorphin but I heard it wasn't necessarily a "stress relieving chemical" per se. That sounds like seasonal affective disorder. You could try one of those table top LED lights. Apparently, it works.

The etiology is a mix. I think some people have a high threshold for stress. Some don't.

i can only recommend it.

what you are describing are basically textbook symtomps of depression. if you can't muster the strength to make an appointment with a doctor then ask your friend if he can help you with it. also seeing a specialist/doctor about this is a good idea because depression is a well studied illness and there are many tried and tested successfull treatment methods.

AFAIK/was told by a psych, it is possible to reprogram the body into a more depressed base state.

I spent a couple years just getting more and more down and feeling more like I was a useless pos who wasn't going anywhere. Wasn't like that all the time, but an increasing percentage of the time since 2010. basically felt like I was marking time and was never going to progress beyond the uni student/casual job phase of my life.

supposedly through this period I was more or less teaching my body a certain physiological way to react to various stimulus, so in theory it was becoming easier to sink into depressive thinking/stay there and much harder to stay/respond positive(ly). not sure how much of this effect is chemical and how much mental

since seeing help and going on SSRIs in early 2013, I've been getting better and have really been making the effort to try and reprogram my responses and thinking. exercise has been the main medication for me - as well as being forgiving of myself and working towards larger and larger goals and projects. came off meds june/july 2013.

tdlr; anecdotal evidence about the physiological effects of depression/my depression

I'm on lexapro (an SSRI) and xanax (a benzo), I'm on the lowest dose of both

I didn't have any side effects from the lexapro as far as I can tell but I don't always feel it works

I'm not addicted to the xanax (but I built up tolerance very quickly), but I am looking to get off it and swap to something non addictive like vistaril

while yes I'm not addicted, I don't think I ever really needed the xanax and benzo use should be avoided unless you really need it (constant panic attacks, won't leave the house, etc)

At one point in my life I had a problem with opiates for about 6 years, and as much as they act on pain receptors, they have a lot to do with sleep and relaxation. Those three things, sleep, pain, relaxation, all coincide with using any opiate. Yes, when you look it up online you may get some doctors terminology of what opiates do/used for, but I can say for someone who has problems with pain, sleep, and anxiety, depression (along with anyone else whose every used opiates) will agree  that they do help for all three things. And now that I don't do any pharmaceuticals,a few breathing techniques I've come across help with releasing your bodies natural opiods, and help tremendously with relaxing, sleeping, and just feeling less stressed and better overall. Everyone is different, and you got to do what makes you feel the best, so what may work for me may not for others. I'll  definitely give that table top LED light a try though. Thanks.

so in other good news my girlfriends therapist suggested indirectly she would be better off without me... :(

They make this implication--sometimes it's even explicit, depending on the person-- to everyone who comes in with relationship issues. After all, it's their job, first and foremost, to help the patient; make them happy.
